Course Descriptions

6th Grade English Language Arts: 6th grade ELA is based on Common Core Standards. Most of our curriculum for reading and writing comes from the ERWC (Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum). The ERWC is a curriculum designed by the California State Universities to better support and prepare middle and high school students for college. We read various articles and novels to help us explore topics such as how individuals achieve greatness and the debate about youth competition in sports.

6th Grade Mathematics: 6th grade ELA is based on Common Core Standards. We use the GO Math! curriculum, as well as other various supporting programs and activities as needed. 6th grade mathematics is an important year as many new topics and content strands are being introduced that students will be using and exploring further in-depth as they progress through middle school and into high school. These are the 6th grade math content areas:

Unit 1: Numbers (Integers, Factors and Multiples, Rational Numbers)

Unit 2: Number Operations (Fractions, Decimals)

Unit 3: Proportionality: Ratios and Rates

Unit 4: Equivalent Expressions (Numerical and Algebraic)

Unit 5: Equations and Inequalities (Algebraic)

Unit 6: Relationships in Geometry

Unit 7: Measurement and Data

Leadership Grades 7 and 8: Leadership class, also known as Student Council, is a class in which students design, plan, and help facilitate activities and fundraisers for the SMS student body. They also are responsible for maintaining student body funds. Students in this class must meet academic and behavioral requirements. They also may have to spend extra time outside of regular school hours volunteering for school and community activities and programs.
