Kevin Michael Sullivan is a native of and will always call Providence, RI home. A respected educator Mr. Sullivan has taught at the WIlliamstown Middle High School, Community College of RI, Kaufman Music Center’s Special Music School, Idyllwild Arts Academy, Lyndon Institute, Providence College, The Moses Brown School, Oakwood Friends School, and has twice been Composer in Residence at West Warwick High School. His former students have gone on to successful careers of their own as well as continuing study at major schools of music and conservatories. Mr. Sullivan has been a guest artist at several schools including the Portsmouth Abbey School, the Community College of RI, the Worth School at Worth Abbey, England and The Beijing Contemporary Music Institute, China.
His administrative appointments include Dean of High School Music at the Special Music School, a collaboration between Kaufman Music Center and the New York City Dept. of Education; Associate Dean Of Students at Idyllwild Arts Academy where he also taught composition and music theory; and 10 years as Director of Student Life at the Bowdoin International Music Festival. During the COVID 19 pandemic he was the Online Academy Coordinator for the Central Vermont Supervisory Union.
Most recently he has been appointed to the board of the of the International Foundation for the Theory and Analysis of World Musics, A research unit in the Brook Center for Music Research and Documentation at the City University of New York Graduate Center. He is also the Co-Managing Editor of the Analytical Approaches to World Music Journal.
Mr. Sullivan’s compositions have been played at Jordan Hall, The Bowdoin International Music Festival, The RI School of Design Film Festival, Brown University, The Public Broadcasting System, Johnson State College, VT, The International Festival of Street Performers, Halifax, Nova Scotia, The FlyWheel Arts Collective, AS220, CBGB's, Idyllwild Arts, and the Beijing Contemporary Music Institute, China.
An active performer, he has appeared in ensembles and as a soloist in China, Canada, and throughout the United States, including performing with Cecil Taylor in 2001. He is an active church musician and was the Interim Organist and Music Director at The First Universalist Church in Providence RI (founded 1821) and currently is Resident Musician and Organist at Saint George Maronite Catholic Church in Cranston RI (founded 1911.)
His areas of interest include composition pedagogy, contemporary music, music of America, and early music. (He took the plunge and is playing recorders as a soloist and in ensembles)
