I spent my first Field Period shadowing Dr. Kerri Taylor at the Family Health Center in rural Munnsville, New York. Dr. Taylor is dual-certified as a Medical Doctor and a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. The Family Health Center is a small family practice with one physician and one Physician's Assistant, and it is affiliated with Community Memorial Hospital in Hamilton, New York.

During this Field Period, I had the opportunity to enter exam rooms with Dr. Taylor. I observed her interaction with patients which gave me insight about the importance of the relationship between a doctor and his/her patients. I learned that patients each have a unique relationship with their doctor. I gathered supplies for procedures and interacted with patients during their visit. I also scanned and filed new patient information into the computer and assisted the staff with a variety of other tasks. One of the most important things I did daily was dress and act appropriately because, as an undergraduate freshman, it was necessary for me to conduct myself in a mature and professional manner. Dressing and acting appropriately helped enhance my interaction with patients.
During my experience, I observed different procedures and learned about illnesses. I am thankful for this being my first field period experience because I was comfortable in the setting. This small rural setting was an eye-opening experience within the medical field of family practice. I now have a much better understanding about what goes on behind the scenes at a small family practice, and I can appreciate all of the work that goes into one visit.
