Chapter Summary

Chapter 1: Stillwater

Mr. Popper is a house painter living in Stillwater. He often strays from his work to fantasize about exotic locations and adventures. He has never been outside of Stillwater, and though he has a good job and a good wife with two children, Bill and Janie, he longs for something more.

Chapter 2: The Voice in the Air

Mr. Popper shares with Mrs. Popper that he longs to have a penguin for a pet. She lets him know that it "out of the question." He remembers to turn on the radio to listen to Admiral Drake's report from the Antarctic. Strangely enough, Drake was speaking directly to Mr. Popper stating that a "surprise would be heading his way."

Chapter 3: Out of the Antarctic

Mr. Popper has a package delivered and he is surprised to find that the mystery object is a penguin straight from the south pole! He tries to accommodate the penguin by drawing it a cold bath but he could not keep the penguin contained in the bath for he kept waddling around the Popper's house.

Chapter 4: Captain Cook

At first, Mrs. Popper was not keen on the thought of having a penguin in the house but she quickly warmed up to Captain Cook - that is, until she noticed that he ate the live goldfish right out of the fishbowl! The Popper's agreed that Captain Cook was a clean, nice bird and they should keep him in the icebox. Mr. Popper decides to create a nest for him in there.

Chapter 5: Troubles with a Penguin

Mr. Popper thought making adjustments to the icebox would be easy - calling in a repairman to do the work. The repairman was a bit skeptical, however, and wished to be given extra money for the jobs Mr. Popper asked of him. It was when the repairman first noticed Captain Cook, though, that this turned wild.

Chapter 6: More Trouble

Not long after the repairman left in shock, the police showed up based on a report of a wild animal in the house. Mr. Popper tried explaining that Captain Cook was a calm bird and the police requested he get a permit. Unfortunately, the call down to town hall did not go over smoothly and did not get Mr. Popper what he needed.

Chapter 7: Captain Cook Builds a Nest

When the kids go off to school, Mr. and Mrs. Popper are busy getting ready for the day. As they go about their business, Captain Cook is moving around the house finding lots of materials. Eventually he makes a large nest in the middle of the house. Mrs. Popper decides that Mr. Popper should take him out for a walk.

Chapter 8: Penguin's Promenade

Mr. Popper found that it was not easy to take a penguin for a walk. While meandering down the streets, Captain Cook found his way to a passerbyers shoes and started pecking at them. They made their way to the drugstore before two men jumped out of a care to take pictures and interview Mr. Popper. They were making a news story about him.

Chapter 9: In the Barbershop

Upon entering the barbershop, Captain Cook gets into some trouble as he starts 'gawk'ing at the man in the barber's chair. Mr. Popper picked up the penguin and went to take him outside, finding a set of stairs. He recognized that Captain Cook liked sliding down on his belly and, to his surprise, he found himself doing the same thing.

Chapter 10: Shadows

The picture of Mr. Popper and Captain Cook appeared in the newspaper the next day. Strangely, Captain Cook was not acting like himself - no longer being mischievous. They took his temperature and he was way too hot. The family was worried about him so Mr. Popper called the Aquarium and, to his surprise, was delivered a second penguin, a female named Greta, to bring Captain Cook to good health.

Chapter 11: Greta

Mr. Popper and his family enjoy the new penguin named Greta and her company nurses Captain Cook back to good health. With a snowstorm approaching, Mr. Popper leaves the windows open and creates an ice rink in the living room for the penguins and his family.

Chapter 12: More Mouths to Feed

Penguins usually only lay 2 eggs at a time but in this case, Greta had 10 eggs and they all hatched. There was now 12 total penguins living in the Popper house! Mr. Popper made a special home for them in the basement, creating a sheet of ice on the basement floor. He also made a swimming and diving pool for the penguins. Although this worked in the winter, Mr. Popper know it would be more difficult come springtime.

Chapter 13: Money Worries

Mrs. Popper began to worry because she knew they were going to run out of money. She thought they could sell the penguins but knew that would make everyone sad. Mr. Popper then had the idea of training the penguins much like seals, hoping to teach them some special tricks and create a show out of them.

Chapter 14: Mr. Greenbaum

With the penguins being trained, Mr. Popper decided he would bring them down to the theater since Mr. Greenbaum, the owner, was in town. He takes them penguins and his family on the bus to the theater where the tries to convince Mr. Greenbaum that the penguins are able to put on an act that people would want to watch.

Chapter 15: Popper's Performing Penguins

The final act of the show did not arrive. Mr. Popper suggested that the theater allow the penguins to perform. To Mr. Greenbaum's surprise, the penguins put on a great, three act show! The audience all cheered and Mr. Greenbaum wanted to sign the penguins for many shows in different cities.
