BHS Speech Team has sent students to the State and National Tournament nearly every year of its existence. In 2019, we had the Valley Champion in Program Oral Interp (POI) as well as Nine top 14 placers at the Valley Speech tournament, including Six in the top 8.
The speaker will present an original informative 10 minute speech about 1 main topic. The speech is the only event where props are allowed and encouraged.
The speaker will give a 7 minute speech about a current event within the United States. Students do not know ahead of the tournament what their speech will be about, only that it will relate to United States issues. For each round at a tournament, the student will select a topic and have 30 minutes to prepare a 7 minute speech to be delivered without the use of notes.

POI (formerly TI) allows the student to express creativity and variety by selecting 3-5 pieces (poetry, prose, dram, song) to weave together into a dynamic performance. 2018 State qualifying speeches for BHS were centered on themes of Education and Fitting In.
Students with a flair for the dramatic will enjoy DI. The student delivers a memorized speech taken from one source (book, plays). This categories pieces depict issues that are difficult in society: violence, abuse, death, historic atrocities. 2018 State Qualifier speech was taken from the book Sophie's Choice.
The speaker will present an interpretation of a 10 minute speech that was originally delivered by someone else. Think TEDtalks.
Students write an original speech about a topic they are passionate about and try to persuade their audience that they too should care deeply. The best OOs challenge the audience to think differently about a topic.
Similar to OO, students will present an original speech on a topic of their choosing. They will propose a clear problem that exists, explain a specific legislative action that could be taken to solve the problem, and defend why that is the best approach.
OPP allows creative writing students the opportunity to showcase their poetic and prose writing skills, as well as, acting skills in their performance of their original writing.
Impromptu is all about thinking on your feet. Students are given a topic to speak on, then have 2 minutes to prepare up to a 5 minute long speech, all without the aid of notes.
Students with a sense of comedic timing and the ability to make people laugh will enjoy HI. The student delivers a memorized speech taken from one source (book, plays). This is a more advanced version of Oral Languages Humorous Solo event.
Students who enjoyed DUO or Verse choir in Oral Language will love Duo Interp. Duo speeches can be humorous or dramatic and require students to play characters. The two student delivers a memorized speech taken from one source (book, plays).
