Reading the Ohio Landscape

Reflections on place by Kenyon College ENVS 106

About

Over the course of the semester, Kenyon College students in ENVS 106: Reading the Ohio Landscape become acquainted with a spot on Kenyon property. Each week, they visit their spots, observe their surroundings, and record observations in their field notebooks. Each week the task is slightly different: compare sketching and photography as methods for capturing observations, create a list of items in a chosen category, listen to and record the sounds of the site, zoom into a small detail. For many, these weekly excursions become grounding fixtures in their schedules, and the spots become a new home on campus.

At the end of the semester, students reflect back on their field notes and craft personal narratives that weave together their experiences at their sites with scientific concepts connected to the course. The personal narratives are accompanied by audio and visual representations of the sites adapted from field sketches and recordings.

Using the maps on each semester's homepage, visit these special locations on Kenyon property. We hope this website encourages you to explore our campus and the beautiful Ohio landscape.
