The main protagonist, a robot who becomes stranded on a remote island and must adapt to her new environment.
Brightbill is the gosling who hatches from the egg that Roz cares for as her own. Over the course of the story, Brightbill grows and develops, forming a strong bond with Roz and becoming a key part of her journey.
Fink is the fox who Roz saves by pulling quills from his face while injured. Over time the two bond and become allies in the wilderness.
Pinktail is the opossum who first encounters Roz after she hatches Brightbill. He uses his unique survival tactic of 'playing dead' to protect himself from danger in the wilderness. Pinktail becomes an ally for Roz.
Longneck is a goose who leads the migration of the flock south for the winter, facing numerous dangers and challenges along the journey.
Thunderbolt is a hawk who initially is a threat to Roz on the island but as with the other animals he becomes a friend playing an important role helping Roz guide Brightbill in learning how to fly.
A bear who initially encounters Roz with hostility, accompanied by her sister Nettle, both posing a threat to Roz at first. However, as the story unfolds, the tension gives way to a growing bond of trust, and they eventually come to rely on each other to survive in the wilderness.
Paddler is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, and he plays a key role in helping Roz and Brightbill build their first home with his knowledge of construction, using natural materials from the forest.
Roz encounters Vontra, a fellow robot. Vontra tries to take Roz back to the factory to reset her.
Roz interacts with other minor animal characters, including:
Crowpoint (Crow) is one of the first animals to encounter Roz when she washes up on the island. At first, he is wary of Roz but eventually serves as a guide for the robot.
Tawny (Deer) and her fawns (Willow, Thistle, and Brook) teach Roz how to garden, find berries, and become friends with the other animals.
Loudwing (Goose) is a loud goose who trains Roz on how to care for Brightbill and how to befriend other animals.
Rockmouth (Beaver) helps Roz build shelter and teaches her how to survive.
Chitchat (Squirrel) is a talkative young squirrel who becomes a friend and playmate for Brightbill as he grows on the island.
Snowden (Wolf) is part of the wolf pack and plays a role in the story.
Houghton (Turtle) helps Roz adjust to life on the island.
Snowball (Owl) is kind to Roz from the start and offers guidance.
Peck (Raven) is another animal ally who assists Roz with survival on the island.
Feather (Chick) helps Roz learn how to be motherly toward Brightbill.
Bumpkin, Rumpkin, and Lumpkin are a group of squirrels who add humor to Roz's life on the island, but like all the other animals, they eventually learn to cooperate and work together.
The Fuzzy Bandits are a group of mischievous raccoons who, at first, are troublesome but, like all the other animals, eventually learn to appreciate one another.
Roz encounters many other animals on the island including: Bears, Otters, Beavers, Geese, Foxes, Insects, Chickadees, Magpies, Mice, Moose and more!
Roz, the geese, and other forest animals encounter a variety of robots, each with its own unique personality and function. Some of the robots possess advanced technological capabilities that allow them to interact with the island's residents.
Roz's interactions with the forest animals and later on the other robots shape her understanding of her own identity and purpose.
