Dr. Kim earned his PhD in Bioengineering from Pennsylvania State University. He then completed his postdoctoral fellowship in the department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology at LSU Health Shreveport and subsequently in the department of Biomedical Engineering at UC Davis. Dr. Kim joined Kent State University as an Assistant Professor in 2012. The focus of his research program lies in the interface of innate immunity and nanotechnology in the context of tissue injury, infection, and repair. His earlier research contributed to gaining important new insights into mechanisms by which innate immune cells, such as neutrophils and macrophages, contribute to the pathophysiological responses to tissue injury and infection. These studies revealed that tightly regulated recruitment and polarization of hematopoietic progenitor cells, neutrophils and macrophages to the site of skin wound is critical for the resolution of S. aureus infections. Currently, his research program has expanded to developing nanomedicine strategies for targeted therapeutics for treating diseases including multidrug-resistant bacterial infections, chronic wounds, and neurodegenerative diseases.
Graduate Students
Naveed is interested in developing the next generation of noninvasive, targeted therapies to tackle CNS diseases. At Kim lab, he integrates approaches across STEM disciplines to develop nanomedicine tools against Alzheimer’s Disease that cross the Blood Brain Barrier and renature amyloids into readily clearable fragments. As an undergraduate at LUMS, he helped develop targeted nanomedicine-based therapies against cancers. Naveed also has a special interest in augmenting the existing biomedicine research techniques and training budding scientists. Outside of work, he likes playing songs by The Beatles on his guitar, and with his wife, enjoys indulging in various cuisines and walking in downtown Kent.
Roger joined the Kim lab in August of 2023 with an interest in studying Alzheimer’s Disease. Currently, Roger's research focuses on determing the mechanism by which magnetothermal stimulation influences the functions of microglia, the brain’s primary immune cells, for the clearnace of beta-amyloid and tau aggregates. When he is not in the lab conducting his research, Roger enjoys exercising, fishing, and playing video games.
