First, We will need an incubator and 15 fertilized eggs. An incubator is a machine in the shape of a box. It keeps a warm temperature for the eggs to grow and develop. For chicken eggs to grow, the temperature needs to be between 99-103 degrees. It takes 21 days for an egg to grow in an incubator and hatch. Below you will see the way the eggs look while they grow!
Day 5 of Incubation: The chicken is starting to look more than just a heart! It now has two eyes and a small body! Still doesn't look like a chicken, but its growing!
Day 18: The process of the embryo absorbing the yolk of the egg into its stomach begins (DINNER TIME). This makes it possible for hatching chicks to survive for up to 48 hours without food or water after it's hatched - they live off the yolk.
To Sum Up:
For the next three days of incubation until hatch, the chick just carries on growing. The albumen (egg white) has now completely disappeared and today is the start of the yolk beginning to be absorbed into the chick's body.
If we opened the egg today what we'd see is mostly chick, with a large expanse of yolk. On top of the yolk is a very complex network of veins.
Below is a video of what Ms. Graham has bought of all the things you will need for a home brooder (a temporary house for the chicks until they are big enough for chicken coop). Home brooders can be easily made!
A container/box (specifics to follow)
Bedding
Two 1-Quart Jars (for feeder and waterer)
Baby chicks!
