TRAINING

Hip Hop Crew offers a greater range of performance experience in comparison to our student-division classes. Weekly lessons are more challenging in order to prepare for competitive performance. Equipped with feedback and rehearsal videos from class, dancers are empowered to achieve personal progress by also practicing at home.

Weekly attendance is critical for choreography creation and development. Non-competitive options are available if the commitment is not a priority.

COMMITMENT

Hip Hop Crew performs at 5 required events in the spring. (See calendar below.) Crew members must:

Participate in all competitions
Follow stage-preparedness guidelines set by our directors
Bring a positive attitude to class and performances
Commit to contributing your best.

We do not require dancers to study other forms of dance for Crew, but it is highly recommended to enhance movement and performance development. Email dance@kehldance.com and we are happy to make recommendations.

Which Crew Do I Sign Up For?

If your dancer is entering grades 1 - 3, Mini Crew is the hip hop crew option. We focus on fun, while building skills learning how to support each other in a team setting.

If your dancer is entering grades 4 - 8, we will pre-approve you for a crew, based on age and experience. If you are new to Kehl or Hip hop in general, please send an email to dance@kehldance.com and we will reach out to you with options.

Our most experienced crew members audition each year in order to provide an advanced training experience for the dancers. Auditions happen in May of each year.

For all others, the sign up period is July 15 - September 8, 2026.

Summer Level up Hip hop classes or mini crew skills class are highly recommended, as well as Intro to Crew classes during our May 11-13 open house, where we will also offer a Parent Q&A session.

In the world of dance, the "icing on the cake" is performing! Hip Hop Crew will learn a dance that will be performed at 5 required events (see calendar above). It is very important to attend these events as performing is a TEAM activity and the dancers rely on each other in formations and specific skills. A few things to know:

Team App contains all of the information you need to know about the competition events, as it becomes available. Event schedules are published 7-10 days prior to the event and posted in Team App.
Entry fees are paid by Kehl, from your Team Fees, except the February Pre-competition event.
There is absolutely no photography or video recording while the dancers are on stage.
Observers are typically allowed at no charge.
Awards are given the same day. Dancers are encouraged to stay for awards.

READY TO PERFORM

A costume is included in your team fee and usually arrives a month or two before performances begin. Dancers will be measured and fitted in class early in the season.

Hip Hop Crews wear a special style of shoes for competitions, chosen by the Crew director.

TEAM APP

Team App is the primary way we share Crew news. Download the app, search for/add Kehl Dance Teams, then request access to Hip Hop Crew.

For timely updates, be sure to read the Team Weekly (see News on Team App). Enabled push notifications will announce when News is updated. The Team Weekly is also emailed based on your app settings.
