Dear Parent(s) / Guardian(s),
The 8th grade science curriculum is designed to meet the New Hampshire State Frameworks and NEXT GEN standards, which cover a unique combination of topics with fun and interesting activities to engage the students! We investigate the following topics: The Properties of Matter, Measurement, Chemistry, Solutions / Acids / Bases, Energy, Forestry, and the Engineering Fair. Each topic includes a variety of hands-on activities to illustrate and reinforce concepts. Some topics will involve research based learning such as the highly regarded Engineering / Science Fair, which takes place in the spring. This will give students the chance to explore a menu of interesting topics and systematically conduct problem solving techniques that will be taught throughout the academic year.
Some Points of Interest:
Term grades are based on class participation, lab reports, tests, projects, homework, and journals. It is also important to work on your time management skills, so be sure to turn in assignments on time.
Extensions on assignments must be negotiated before the due date! After the due date students will need a note from home in regards to negotiating an extension.
Students are responsible for any information or work missed when absent from class (whatever the reason). Please take the time to check with your teacher upon return or seek out google classroom for any make-up work. Students will be allowed a few extra days to make up the work that was missed.
Lab work is a critical part of the science curriculum, and most of all it’s fun. Responsible behavior is mandatory to allow a safe and conducive working environment. Any misbehavior will result in the dismissal from the science lab and a zero on that particular lab report.
All 8th graders are required to complete an Engineering Fair / Science Fair Project. This will be held in April, which will be guided by your son/daughter’s science teacher, with importance placed on meeting various goals starting in February & extending into mid April.
I am looking forward to a successful academic year and your continued support at home with your son / daughter’s achievement is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Mr. Nathan Camp, M.Ed.
