Please read this Newsela article. in your journal address the following prompts; In paragraph form write about what good trees are for humans and other animals on the planet. Mr. Saulnier 8-2 Due Tuesday October 15, 2019
We will watch a movie soon about Real Science vs. Pseudo Science.
1. It is not unusual for people to get confused as to the difference between real science and what we call pseudo or make-believe science.
2. Before or after you watch the video, complete the following assignment:
Get some information on one (1) of the following topics by looking it up or speaking to someone.
1. Dowsing for water
2. Palm Reading
3. Handwriting Analysis
4. Aliens visiting the Earth
5. Healing of Therapeutic touch
In your journal write a page on what you have found out about the topic that you have chosen.
How might the scientific method help one to understand if one of these topics concerns real science or not?
Due Friday October 4, 2019
Please read the following Newsela and follow the instructions
https://newsela.com/read/teen-preparing-for-mars/id/43988/
Would you go on a mission to Mars? Do you think space exploration is a good idea? What do you think are some the benefits of preparing for and going on a mission to Mars? In your opinion what are some drawbacks to taking such a long space mission?
Please read the Newsela article on Balloons.
https://newsela.com/read/balloons-rising-environmental-concern/id/45408/
After years of evidence about plastics building up in the oceans and doing environmental damage, is it time to make laws about what people can buy. Straws, plastic bags and balloons have been band in some areas. Do you feel that banning balloons is a good idea? What suggestions do you have that might help stop plastic pollution?
Due Friday September 14, 2018
https://newsela.com/read/elem-big-q-salt-in-oceans/id/44202/
Please read the article carefully. The second paragraph has a lot of information. In your journal, please tell where and how salts get in the ocean. If you have ever been to the ocean, do you think the amount of salt in the ocean changes how high you can float? What is salinity?
Assignment #1
Significant Scientists
Please See Handout
https://newsela.com/read/elem-loch-ness-monster-DNA-tests/id/43803
Please read the article. In your journal reflect on the topic. Please discuss some of the problems the scientists could encounter sampling and testing the DNA of Loch Ness. Do you think there are creatures on earth that have yet to be discovered? Do you believe that are large organism like Sasquatch can evade detection for long periods of time in today's world?
Due May 18
Please read this very interesting article about a local celebrity. In your journal please write about rehabilitation of wild animals. Can animals be fully released back into the wild? Once animals are used to humans can they be truly "wild"?
https://newsela.com/read/elem-cat-paws/id/39738
As we study the Human Body we will read about different conditions that effect us. Please read the Newsela article. In your journal write about how the bacteria that causes the plague moves from species to species. Can you give an example of any other organisms that harm humans that are carried by other organisms?
NESELA

Due Monday November 13, 2017
Read the article about invasive fish in the floating gardens of Xochimilco. As you read, consider the changes caused by invasive species. As you read, highlight details that show the EFFECTS of the invasive species in your journal. After each detail explain what CAUSED the effect.

What causes the seasons to change?
It may not seem like it just yet, but the change in season is about to happen. The change from Summer to Fall or Winter to Spring is not magic. The change might seem like magic with the “rebirth” of plants and the return of the songbirds. There is a predictable physical relationship between our planet and our Sun that causes the changes in our weather that we experience each year.
In your journal using text and diagrams I want you to show your understanding about how and why the seasons change.
To be complete, your entry should have 5 Circles showing the position of the planet in relationship to the Sun for all of the seasons. You should also write about what causes the change.

For full credit, please use at least 1 Journal page for your response. Your work must be in your journal.
Remember any word you do not understand will be in a dictionary.
Please read the article and in your journal write about the following three questions;
1) What is the definition of "Biosphere"?
2) What way do you think we can keep Earth safe if we bring samples back from Mars?
3) Is space exploration a good use of money? Please justify your opinion.
