Reading is an essential skill that requires practice just like swimming or swinging a baseball bat. Those children who don’t read during the summer may find themselves at a serious disadvantage when they return to school in the fall. According to the U.S. Department of Education, children who read 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, can dramatically increase their reading and writing skills. It is a KRSD School Board Policy.
Research spanning 100 years shows that students tend to score lower on the same standardized tests at the beginning of the school year than at the end of the school year (National Summer Reading Association) http://www.summerlearning.org/?page=know_the_facts, due to what is considered the “summer slide.”
The summer slide, http://blog.ed.gov/2012/06/top-5-ways-to-prevent-rusty-summer-readers/, is the regression that occurs when students are disengaged from reading over the summer months. To avoid the summer slide, the U.S. Department of Education recommends that students read about 30 minutes every day. Like any skill, if left unused, the potential for a slide or loss of a specific skill is greater. Reading throughout the summer keeps reading skills sharp and increases vocabulary, which is a critical component of reading comprehension.
All incoming 6th, 7th and 8th grade students are required to read two books this summer and record both of these books on this reading log form. You can also access this form in your YOG (year of graduation) Google Classroom.
