What does the report card look like?
Grading is simply a way to communicate what’s been learned. A competency-based report card will look different than the report cards in the past as it will include the following information for each course in which the student is enrolled:
Overall Course Grade
A grade for each Competency in the course
A grade for the student's performance in the KRHS 21st Century Skills
How does this reporting system impact GPA?
Grade Point Average (GPA)
GPA is calculated using final grades from courses. They are not updated mid-course. This means that that the GPA on transcripts only reflects stored grades from the end of a semester or school year.
Prior to the 2024-2025 school year, GPA calculations were completed by taking the score in a course and using a conversion that assigned GPA points to a 4 point scale. Currently, these GPA points are stored for each credit earned and continue to be used in the overall GPA calculation.
Starting with the 2024-2025 school year, GPA is derived directly from the overall score in the course (See Chart Below), and is stored for each credit earned. The overall GPA calculation continues to follow the past practice of averaging all stored GPA points from all completed credits.
Does this kind of reporting hurt my child’s chances of getting into college?
Not at all. KRHS will report out on competencies while also still giving an overall academic grade for the course on transcripts. Colleges will be getting all the information they’ve gotten before. There will be additional information about students’ work habits and study skills so colleges will get a much better picture of who each student is. College and university admissions offices like getting a better picture of who their applicants are, so this is an advantage for everyone. What exactly ARE competencies?
Competencies are a way of organizing what students need to learn, by showing that they can apply the content and skills they develop in their classes. Each class has certain competencies (created from standards) set as their expectations, and teachers work with students to make sure they can successfully meet their goals.
