My job title at Kearsarge is: Fifth Grade Teacher
Year started working at Kearsarge: 2005
I went to college at: Indiana University and Simmons College
Special training that I have is: My master's degree is in children's literature. I also have lots of training in teaching reading and math.
Favorite book: Well, I couldn't possibly choose just one, or even a few, but I can never resist a book by James Marshall, Rebecca Stead, or Jane Austen.
You should visit my classroom when:
-we are having Morning Meeting: We will be learning social and academic skills in a playful atmosphere. We will also practice living like writers by sharing the small moments from our lives that make great stories.
-we are having Math Stations: We might be investigating how many rectangular prisms we can make with 24 cubes, baking pumpkin bread, or tearing the corners off a triangle to find the sum of the angles.
-we are having Book Club: Partners will be sitting knee-to-knee, having sophisticated conversations about connections to the book, what we are wondering, and what we notice about theme, characterization, and author's style.
-we are studying American History: We might be having a rollicking class game of "Oregon Trail," writing a historical fiction book, or simulating the journey to Ellis Island.
A Perfect Vacation Day: Here's one: We drove to Manchester, Vermont. We toured Hildene, the summer home of Robert Lincoln, who was Abraham Lincoln's son. Then we went to Northshire Book Store and I spent an hour reading about the books the staff of the store recommends. After treating myself to ONE of those books, we had supper and went to a play in the evening. ALL my favorite things in one day!
My Claim to Fame: I make a great apple pie!
