Curriculum Highlights -
Here are a few knowledge nuggets to know about what we've been working on learning in 5th grade so far:
Reading - We're reading My Side of the Mountain as a class and working on establishing good reading habits that help with comprehension; these include: visualizing, predicting, and making connections. We've also been collecting traits about the characters. We've been taking notes!
We've also been peeking at the peregrine falcon live webcams to see these birds in connection to what we are reading! Here are the live-feed links if you/your student are interested:

Writing - We're working on Personal Narrative stories. We've been brainstorming topics, narrowing our writing focus, selecting specific details and working with different beginnings we could use to start our stories. We are just getting started!
Word Study (Spelling) - We've been unscrambling "Big Words" while looking at common letter patterns. Students try to utilize a set of letters to find a "big word" while utilizing spelling rules to create as many words as possible along the way!
Math - We're wrapping up our first study of data analysis - we collected, organized and analyzed data. Students created surveys, measured leaves and interpreted a collection of shoe sizes to work with various data. We've also been working with our calendar math - this looks at a new number each day (the number of days we've been in school) compared to the first 100 days of school. We represent that number as a fraction, decimal and percentage. Our next focus is partial numbers with an emphasis on decimals to the thousandths. If you see any decimals out "in the wild" talk with your 5th grader about what those mean! Numbers that are so small and part of a whole are sometimes tough to grasp right away. It is a big emphasis in 5th grade.
Science - Food chains! We've played a fun card game "Eat or Be Eaten" to help us think about food chains. Students are currently creating a food chain that is at least 4 steps and they are working to illustrate and describe their chains.
Social Studies - Our focus is the US Constitution with a focus on the Preamble. We are in the midst of creating our own classroom constitution and preamble to describe our hopes and dreams for our classroom this year. Based on a classroom survey, here are the words we hope to have in our classroom. The largest words had the most requests! We are certainly looking forward to a fun year of learning.
