Welcome Back to School!
Happy October, everyone!
As we close out my first full month here at KRES-NL, I want to share how happy I am to be part of this school. In just these few weeks, I’ve had the chance to see the dedication of our staff, the joy and curiosity of our students, and the strong support of our families.
It has been a wonderful beginning, and I look forward to the rest of the year as we continue this learning journey and creating a welcoming and engaging place for all of our learners.
Warmly,
Laura Newman
News and Announcements
Grades 4 and 5 participated in a ceremony to observe Patriots Day. Since 2002, our community has celebrated Patriots Day (the official name given to September 11th) to honor the people in the community who stand ready to help in an emergency.
PTO meetings are held in the KRES-NL library at 6:00 PM every 2nd Tuesday. All are welcome so please join us if you are interested in joining the PTO, or reach out to PTO President, Beth Hansen, at kresnewlondonpto@gmail.com for more information.
The scholastic Book Fair will be held this week, October 1st - 3rd. https://www.scholastic.com/bf/newlondonelementaryschool3.
Volunteers are still needed for shifts during the Fall Book Fair THIS WEEK and Fall Festival on FRIDAY. You do not need to be officially fingerprinted for these events. Please see if a time slot will work for you! We appreciate your help to make these exciting events for our kids possible.
A presentation was given to grades 4 and 5 on October 1st by volunteers from GE Aerospace. The presentation included personal stories about their roles and how education has shaped their careers. The goal of the presentation was to inspire students and discuss the importance of education and STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math) fields.
The local fire department will be providing our students with an interactive fire prevention lesson. This is a great opportunity to talk as a family about what to do if there is an emergency in your home. Fewer and fewer homes have landlines, so it's no longer as simple as teaching your child to pick up the phone and call 911. Some things to consider with your child(ren):
How can they call for help if there is an emergency and there isn't an adult around or the adult is unresponsive? Do they know how to unlock and use your phone?
Do they know their street address or is it written somewhere in the home for them to easily find? It is recommended to have this displayed on the refrigerator or somewhere else that is easily accessible for kids.
Is there a neighbor's house who they could run to for help if they needed? You can practice this by walking to that neighbor's house with your child and having a conversation with your child and the neighbor about their role as supportive adults.
Do you have an outdoor "meeting spot" where your family can find each other in the case of an emergency?
Time to start thinking about Winter Activities! The Winter Activities program at KRES-NL takes place on Friday afternoon, during school hours, in January and early February. The program is intended to get children active during the winter months, either doing a winter activity they already love-or introducing them to one they would love to try. The main program is run for students 1st-5th grades. Kindergarten runs its own special program. If you would like to make a contribution to our Winter Activities scholarship fund or our hot chocolate fund, the PTO will have a table at Open House where you can donate by using PayPal, check, or cash. Chaperones will work in conjunction with school staff to supervise students and will follow district field trip rules. Please save these dates if you plan to volunteer. 1/16/26, 1/23, 1/30, 2/6, 2/13 with a makeup date of 2/20. Also, please note that if you plan to take your child to Ragged Mountain outside of the school-facilitated programming, you will need to commit to all dates and will not be able to utilize the school-facilitated program if you choose to do this. Chaperones will need to be fingerprinted, please see the post below on fingerprinting.
At the end of September and early October, school counselors and teachers are working with students in classrooms to discuss the procedures in the event of an active shooter or unsafe person in or around the building. While this is scary to discuss, it is of the utmost importance that all students and staff are aware of how to react in an unsafe situation. As mentioned above, the Kearsarge School District is trained in the ALICE approach. A more detailed letter was sent via Blackboard Connect. If you are looking for more information, click here.
On the morning of October 6th, students will participate in an off-site evacuation drill. Students in Pre-K, Kindgerten, and Grade 1 will walk with their teachers to St. Andrews Church. Students in Grades 2-5 will walk with their teachers to Colby Sawyer. Once students have arrived and are accounted for, they will return to school. If you know your student may be late to school, please wait to drop off them off until students and staff return to the KRES-NL campus at around 9:45 AM.
The former New London Recreation Director, Chad Denning, dedicated his tenure to facilitating and encouraging our community's health and well-being. He advocated for sidewalks to be built so that students could travel safely to school, and he was a valued and vibrant member of our school community. We are excited to honor his legacy with our annual Walk/Bike to School Day tentatively on October 15 (rain date of 10/16). Please be sure to complete the form by Monday, October 13th, if you DO NOT want your bus-riding student to participate (other students not wanting to participate may arrive to school as they normally do). This opt-out form will be sent home with your child in the next week.
The running club will start on October 7th, after school! Join Mr. Angus, Miss Graf, Mr. Rainville, and Mrs. Garcia for some running fun. This club is for students in grades 2-5.
This year, all 5th grade students are encouraged to submit at least three or more digital artifacts by the end of the school year. As in previous years, digital portfolios are an important way for students to demonstrate how they use technology across various subjects. This initiative supports KRSD school board policy and meets the New Hampshire state mandate.
The lost and found rack is accumultating sweatshirts, jackets and even in these short few weeks continues to grow! If your child is missing an item please have them look for their missing item in our lost in found in the MPR. We'll put items out during the open house on October 15th, as well.
December 5th will mark the end of the first trimester. Our teachers spent some time prior to the start of school preparing for the rollout of our updated report card. Reporting on learning will now include discrete information on the learning targets each student is working towards mastery on. We feel strongly that this format will provide greater clarity on a student's specific skills and learning progression in each area. Each student will have feedback on their strengths, or areas of growth as a "Portrait of a Learner": Curious, Conscience, Caring. Click to View the Portrait of a Kearsarge Learner Video
If you would like to volunteer for a school event, upcoming field trip,❄️ winter activities❄️, or something in the classroom, please reach out to reach to Tamra Kinzer (TKinzer@kearsarge.org, or 603-526-2051). Tamra will schedule anyone interested for fingerprinting (the SAU is no longer taking walk-ins). Currently, scheduling for fingerprinting can occur on Tuesday morning or Thursday afternoon. Turnaround for fingerprinting is 2-3 weeks, so please plan ahead if there is a specific event that you hoped to help with. Thank you!
At the end of the month, grade five (5) will be learning about the various changes associated with puberty. A letter from our Wellness teacher, Ms. Williams, will be emailed out mid-month with more information about the lessons associated with this unit, as well as an opt-out form.
Please consider making a donation to our Cougar Cubby. Preferred items include ready-made or easily prepared foods such as:
Macaroni and cheese or ramen noodles
Individually packed snack items such as granola bars
Hannaford gift cards
Families are encouraged to communicate directly with our school nurse regarding any health concerns, so appropriate actions can be taken to support the wellness of each student and our school community. Please reach out to our School Nurse, Margaux Nichols, at mnichols@kearsarge.org if you have any questions.
Please make sure all health records, including required medical examinations, are on file.

The Facilities Committee (a School Board Sub Committee) will be hosting monthly meetings/tours for the public. Tours will rotate through each school in our district. This is an opportunity to see our buildings firsthand and contribute your input. The School Board encourages community members to participate and become actively involved in the decision-making process as we assess the condition of certain school facilities and consider the best way forward. The kick off meeting will is October 1st at 6:30. The New London Elementary Facilities Tour will be on January 7th.
