Literacy Express is a program which provides opportunities for Lugoff-Elgin High School (LEHS) students to read aloud to students in West Wateree area elementary schools and beyond. The program began in 2013 with 13 students and has grown exponentially each year ever since!
Research shows that if children acquire strong reading skills and a love of reading, they are more likely to succeed academically and graduate on time.
Through a collaborative effort between LEHS and West Wateree area elementary schools, high school students travel to the surrounding elementary schools to read aloud to elementary students. The program serves students in 4K through 5th grade.
YOU can make a difference! Join us for this fun activity. Bonus: this experience may be used as community service hours! If you are interested in joining, fill out this Google Form or stop by the LEHS library to see Ms. Lemieux. For any questions, email Ms. Lemieux at anne.lemieux@kcsdschools.net.
How does it work?
Visits to schools will be scheduled by Ms. Lemieux. Students who have expressed interest will be notified of the plans and must come to the library to pick up the proper paperwork.
In the case of limited capacity events, students will be chosen on a first come, first served basis.
Students must choose their book, practice reading it, and report to the library at the date and time indicated.
Bus transportation will be provided to the event site. Literacy Express students are representatives LEHS and should behave accordingly.
