Happy Friday! It is crazy to think we have already reached our last month of the school year! Students have worked hard this week and finished our last round of MAP tests for the year.

Read below to see what we have been working on!

Literacy

We finished reading our shared text, Jess and Layla’s Astronomical Assignment. It is a science fiction book about two friends who time travel with the help of magical van. During their time travel journey, they meet famous astronomers, such as Galileo, Aristotle, and Copernicus. Although these astronomers had conflicting opinions, Jess and Layla learned that their theories helped us understand more about the universe today. We also read science fiction story, "Mayday on the Moon of Jupiter". Using both texts, we compared and contrasted how the authors approached a shared theme. In the upcoming weeks, we will continue to work on this literacy skill using other paired texts.

Writing

We wrapped up our Real Life Superhero speeches this week! Students have really enjoyed researching, working on their notecards, and presenting about their real-life superhero to the class. We learned so much about individuals, such as Ada Lovelace, Jackie Robinson, Abraham Lincoln, and Marie Curie, who made a positive impact on our society. During the rest of the year, we will continue to work on refining our analytical writing skills. With our next writing assignment, students are given the choice to choose a prompt. Some topics included preparing for a marathon, preparing for a special holiday, or preparing for a new pet. All choices related to the preparation of a specific event or topic.

Math

We are in our last unit of math this year! This unit teaches us multiple strategies for dividing whole number. Some strategies for division include: ratio table, area model, partial quotients, and the standard algorithm. Students have been working hard to refine their skills to divide multi-digit numbers using a strategy they feel most comfortable with. Within the unit, we will also be learning more about the powers of ten and multiplying and dividing decimals.

Social Studies

We have begun our final unit of study in social studies, which focuses on the rights and responsibilities of United States citizens and government. Students have learned about the different branches of government (legislative, executive, judicial). We also learned the components of checks and balances and discussed the importance of shared power within the government. Next, we will be exploring how our country’s founders established a system of federalism within the United States.
