6th - 8th Grade - This semester-long course will focus on projects and activities that will both develop new and enhance your existing artistic skills. We will focus on the procedures of art making, on the Elements of Art, and on reflection and criticism of art. No artistic experience or pre-existing skills are required, but you must be willing to work on specific assignments and be able to follow directions.
6th Grade - In the KMS 6th Grade Band, you will learn how to play a variety of music on the instrument of your choice. We will explore different styles and techniques of music and will use our newfound knowledge to perform several concerts. In this class, we work hard, work as a team, learn a lot, and have a lot of fun in the process! No previous musical experience is necessary!

8th Grade - In the KMS 8th Grade Band, we will continue to learn new notes and discover new techniques on our instruments. We will explore different styles of music, learn how to play with expression, and use our newfound knowledge to perform extraordinary concerts. We also use our knowledge and skills to compete at several state competitions and festivals of music. Members will also have honor band opportunities such as Cabarrus County All-County Band and the South Central District Bandmasters Association All-District Band. In this class, we work hard, work as a team, learn a lot, and have a lot of fun in the process!
6th - 8th Grade - This course is an alternate course to physical education and focuses on dance movement skills, technique, creativity, and choreography. Dancers will work towards end of semester concerts that display their increasing confidence, skills, and performance abilities. In dance class students will work as a team to create and problem solve. We work hard in dance class and are filled with pride as we take the stage to showcase our final dances at the end of the semester. Dancers will also receive health education during class.
7th - 8th Grade - Speech and Debate students learn the skills necessary to speak in front of a group like a professional. The skills that students develop are: Posture, Speaking Clearly, Tone of Voice, Body Language, and Eye Contact. We practice these skills through presentations of speeches written by students, improvisation exercises, and various other speaking opportunities. Students then use these skills to participate in competitive debates. Debates can be whole class, small group vs small group, or at its most advanced, 1 vs 1. In debate, students learn how to format and present powerful arguments, and develop counterpoints to attack their opponents claims. To be successful in Speech and Debate, students must be willing to participate regularly, write original speeches, research facts to support their side of a debate, write their claims in preparation for debates, and be respectful listeners and eager participants.

7th - 8th Grade - Odyssey of the mind involves cooperating as a team to solve a rotating series of complex problems. Types of problems in the rotation include: building/STEM activities, awkward physical tasks, and original dramatic performances. The essence of the class is teamwork. All students are required to work with anyone in the class at any time in a small group of typically 4-5 students. No one ever works alone. For each task, teams are graded on 4 categories: Creativity, Cooperation, Communication, and Task Success. To be successful in Odyssey of the Mind, students must be willing to be respectful and cooperative teammates, no matter who they are with, or the difficulty of the task.
Exploring Healthcare classes introduces students to the study of health sciences and health related careers in a hands-on environment. Students will explore key concepts and foundational knowledge for in-demand, allied health professions to spark interest in the Health Science Education Pathway in High School and beyond.
6th Grade - Students will gain an understanding of medical terminology, body systems (skeletal, muscular, and integumentary) and careers related to Therapeutic Services. Students will additionally be exposed to essential skill career training such as communication, work place etiquette, ethical situations and industry vocabulary.
7th Grade - Students will gain an understanding of medical terminology, body systems (respiratory and circulatory) and careers related to Diagnostic Services. Students will additionally be exposed to essential skill career training such as communication, work place etiquette, ethical situations and industry vocabulary.
8th Grade - Students will gain an understanding of medical terminology, the nervous system and five senses, and careers related to Biotechnology. Students will additionally be exposed to essential skill career training such as communication, work place etiquette, ethical situations and industry vocabulary.
6th Grade - Exploring Engineering Technologies
This class will focus on the Technological Systems and problem solving. Students will design and test different types of systems.
7th Grade - Exploring Carpentry
This course is designed to teach students about construction vocabulary and career fields in construction technology. Students will also take part in hands-on projects such as framing scale house designs.
8th Grade - Exploring Electrical Trades
This course is designed to teach students about electrical trades vocabulary and career fields in electrical technology. Students will also take part in hands-on projects such as wiring different types of outlets.
6th - 8th Grade - Exploring Careers and Employment students learn about a variety of available jobs, and the skills that are necessary to be successful in those jobs. We talk about multiple career pathways and apply the skills that we learn using technology that relates to each job. We also explore specific job tasks using virtual reality simulations. This class also focuses on employability skills to help students be successful in the world of work and employment.
6th - 8th Grade - In this middle school Bible History classroom, students explore the historical context, cultural background, and influential stories of the Bible in a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive environment. Lessons focus on understanding the Bible as a historical document, examining key events, people, and places from both the Old and New Testaments. The classroom fosters open discussions, encouraging students to ask questions and consider how these historical events influenced civilizations, literature, and worldviews.
Using interactive materials, including maps, timelines, and primary source excerpts, students engage in hands-on activities and projects that bring ancient history to life. The goal is for students to gain a broad, academic understanding of Biblical history, its impact on society, and its role in shaping various cultures, all while developing critical thinking skills and respect for diverse perspectives.
Dual Language Program for Middle School: Conexiones
Conexiones is a unique educational initiative designed to provide students with an enriching experience that combines Spanish language proficiency with a deep understanding of global issues. Our program ensures that students not only develop fluency in Spanish but also cultivate vital skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in an interconnected world.
At the heart of Conexiones is our innovative curriculum, which employs project-based learning to engage students in meaningful exploration of key themes. Through dynamic lessons and collaborative projects, students delve into topics such as Global Society and Culture, Environment and Geography, Access and Equity, and Economic Sustainability. By exploring these themes, students gain insight into diverse perspectives, develop empathy, and become empowered to effect positive change in their communities and beyond.
Participating 8th-grade students undergo AAPPL testing, which provides valuable feedback on their language proficiency and helps guide their ongoing development.
6th - 7th Grade - Computer Science Discoveries I & II
This semester-long course will focus on instruction in the various components used with television production. Students will learn about computer hardware systems, input and output devices, application and software design, and gamification. Students will incorporate these standards while focusing on the relationship between computing hardware components, software, and how it relates to video production equipment, such as cameras, lighting, and video editing software. It helps prepare students to produce WKMS, the school’s closed circuit student news show.
8th Grade - Exploring Digital Arts 1
This semester-long middle school design course aims to introduce students to the fundamental principles of design and creative problem-solving. Through a hands-on and project-based approach, students will explore various aspects of design, including graphic design, product design, and user experience. The course encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and the development of essential skills that can be applied across disciplines.
Students will apply their learning to produce a quarterly magazine.
8th Grade CTSO (Year-Long)
This intensive year-long class provides students with comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in the principles of design, photography, writing, and use of editing software. The course encourages leadership, critical thinking, collaboration, and the development of essential skills that can be applied across disciplines. Students will apply their knowledge and skills by producing the 2024-2025 KMS Wing yearbook, as well as assisting in the production of WKMS, KMS’s weekly news show. Select students will have the opportunity to take this knowledge and compete at the state and potentially national level through SkillsUSA. Students who participate in SkillUSA hone their hands-on and public speaking skills against current industry standards in more than 130 occupational areas. At the same time, they develop the transformative career-readiness skills — teamwork, communication, professionalism, leadership and more — that fuel career and life success.
