Dear Abby,
I feel very sad, hurt, and angry these days because one of my classmates always says mean and unkind things to me. It makes me feel miserable at school, and I don't know how to deal with this situation. What can I do to stop this and protect myself?
A Worried Student
Dear Worried Student,
I am so sorry you are going through this, but please remember that you always deserve to be treated with kindness and respect. When your classmate says mean things, try your best to stay calm, look them in the eye, and say firmly, “Please stop. I don’t like that.” If they continue to tease you, do not argue with them. Simply say, “Are you done? I’m going now,” walk away calmly, and go play with other supportive friends who make you feel happy.
If this unkind behavior happens again, do not handle it alone. Keep track of what happened and tell your teacher or counselor right away. Staying calm, walking away, and asking a trusted adult for help will keep you safe and confident at school. Wishing you a wonderful new school year filled with great friendships!
Love,
Abby
