Welcome to the very first Fun Lab! Each issue, we’ll explore exciting science and math ideas from the KCFS program. You’ll get to learn something cool, then try a quick challenge or activity at home or in class. Are you ready to ask, test, and explore? Let’s get started!
Light and Shadows
Have you ever noticed how your shadow changes when you move around? That’s because light always travels in straight lines. When something blocks the light, it creates a shadow. The closer the light source is to the object, the bigger the shadow looks. When the light moves farther away, the shadow becomes smaller. This is why streetlights at night can make shadows stretch out really long!
Try it at home!
Shine a flashlight on a toy. Move the light closer and farther away. Can you make your toy’s shadow taller than the toy itself?
