The first KCFS project for the Grade 4 students this semester is to design a roller coaster. Even though roller coasters throw riders up and down and from side to side at great speeds, they go by themselves, without the power of an engine. An engine is only used to pull the roller coaster up the very first hill. After that, natural forces take over. Once the roller coaster is past the top of the first hill, gravity pulls the riders the rest of the way. When the roller coaster starts going down the first hill, it goes so fast that it gets enough speed to send it all the way up the next hill - and so on, as it whizzes around the track. At the end of the ride, the roller coaster uses brakes to stop.
Roller Coaster Challenge:
Color the roller coaster cars green if they are going fast and red if they are going slow. Take your completed picture to your KCFS teacher. If the colors are correct, your teacher will give you a stamped note that you can take to the ID office for a gift.
