My name is Leslie Danner, and I am so excited to be one of Kansas City International Academy's School Counselors! I am originally from the Kansas City area, and attended Graceland University on a soccer scholarship. The university was nestled in a very small town, so my teammates became family members, and our field was our home away from home. I loved having that close, supportive relationship with such a large group, each bringing individual talents, yet working collaboratively toward the same goal.
When I wasn't playing soccer, I studied Psychology, Art, and Spanish. After graduating, I went on to receive my Masters Degree in Art Therapy Counseling from Emporia State University and worked for several years as a local art therapist. Who doesn't love doing art to express their feelings??
Since that time, I briefly lived in Costa Rica, only to return to Kansas City to get my Masters Degree in School Counseling. My program allowed me to work and observe in many districts in the area. I am thrilled that my journey has led me to KCIA!
In my free time, I enjoy being outdoors, playing sports, biking, hiking, exploring, and traveling. I love doing art, playing my ukelele (attempting to get better at it), and spending as much time with my family and friends as I can. Everyday I try to laugh, think positively, show others how much they are appreciated, work hard, and have fun doing so!
As a school counselor, I am here to help students! I teach lessons in each class throughout the school year that focus on healthy social and emotional development, and lifelong skills that will help them in and outside of the classroom. For example, we might discuss study skills, how to express our feelings in a healthy way, or practice our social skills with each other.
When I'm not in a classroom, I meet with students individually and in small groups. Sometimes we have big feelings, and it helps to have someone to talk to about those feelings, or simply to have a space to process our thoughts.
I love getting to connect with students and their families. I always want to support what is best for a student. Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions, concerns, or just to say hello! I look forward to connecting with you!
