In a collaborative effort, the CAC convened in early October to review feedback from staff and students, which was gathered through district-wide student safety surveys, behavioral data, and a needs assessment completed by classroom teachers. Together, we were able to identify the strengths and areas of need for the developmental guidance program at MRE. The team then formulated a plan based on the data from the most current needs assessment and feedback from the community.
This data was used to determine goals for the following year. For example, we discussed the need for a guidance curriculum with consistent concepts across all grade levels. We used needs assessments and data to decide which school-wide events and programs to continue. Importantly, we reiterated our commitment to supporting all stakeholders in the Morton Ranch community through the school counseling program.
The First Two Weeks (Morning Meetings)
Calm Down Corner Morning Meetings
Example of the Completed Implementation Cycle
Organizing: We began by reviewing the data from the comprehensive needs assessment and the discipline data. The highest needs were self-control, emotional regulation, and conflict resolution skills. We chose to work on the areas of conflict resolution and emotional regulation.
Planning: The CAC, in a collaborative effort, reviewed the needs assessment and provided valuable feedback on what could be beneficial for our students in the areas of emotional regulation and conflict resolution, along with additional ideas for student support. In close collaboration with teachers, the MRE Counselors planned to implement calm-down kits in each classroom and provide teachers with the resources to teach the students how to use them. Mrs. Warren, with the support of the team, planned to introduce the "Peace Path" as a conflict resolution strategy for grades 3 through 5.
Designing: With careful consideration, we examined multiple examples of calm-down kits and determined the best tools to include in our MRE kits. Mrs. Warren, with her expertise, was also able to demonstrate how the "Peace Path" works and how it will be implemented, instilling confidence in the chosen strategies.
Implementing: MRE counselors will collaborate with the CAC team to continue implementing new elements of conflict resolution, such as "I—Statements" and how to apologize. Mrs. Perez will work to create a concept that also works for PreK-2. We will continue providing additional resources and training to support using calm-down kits.
Evaluating: Mrs. Warren and Mrs. Perez will review behavioral data and needs assessments collected at the end of the year to determine the effectiveness of these strategies and what we should do to continue their implementation.
