Where to start?
The first step is to figure out what your genre categories will be - fiction and nonfiction. I personally looked at the school curriculum and based my genres for nonfiction off of that. For fiction genres, I went with typical fiction categories I had seen in my research:

I was hesitant about keeping the classics as a genre, but I had so many students who were asking for classic literature, that I have kept that category. There are some students who just prefer reading only classic literature.

For nonfiction, as mentioned, I looked at the curriculum and how students may be searching for content. This primarily affects the science section, but could also affect social studies. For example, here's a comparison of the science categories between JH and HS.

Ultimately, your categories should be what works for your students! It will take planning and preparation to figure out what those will be. I did student and teacher surveys, created a Student Advisory Committee (SAC) to consult, and spent a TON of time researching genrefication from Tiffany Whitehead (www.mightylittlelibrarian.com) and others who were genrefying back in 2014.

Just a note: what is so fun for me about genrefying is that the categories are really dictated by my students! If I see that something isn't working, it can be changed, tweaked, and reshaped to make it work. Don't be afraid of fluidity and change...it is the hallmark of genrefication!
