As librarians, we are all about the kids and helping them be independent searchers and users of the library. In my first library job, I noticed students were asking me "Miss, where are the ____________ books?" You can fill in the blank with almost any topic: princess, animals, sports, bats, sharks, Clifford, etc. I started to genrefy my nonfiction based on their interests, but I moved to a new Junior High library before I could finish the process.
It only took two months in my new junior high to realize that I had to make some changes. The students were getting increasingly frustrated.
When you consider Dewey, here's just one example: students looking for military books had to go to the following sections to see what they may like:
Military Personnel and Vehicles - 350s
Military Vehicles and Weaponry - 623
Wars - 900s (all throughout)
Biographies - Biography section
Military Issues - 363s
Additionally, the students historically didn't really like coming to the library because they couldn't find what they wanted, so it was imperative that I do something to allow them to have fun in the library and be more independent!
Thus began my genrefication journey...
The Results Came In Quickly!
After two months of weeding, labeling, and planning, we relaunched the library! There was an immediate change in how students felt about the library and their success.
