Encouraging Listening and Comprehension Skills

Listening is one of the most important skills children develop during their early years. It forms the foundation for language development, communication, and meaningful learning. At preschool, we provide children with engaging opportunities to listen, understand, and respond through stories, rhymes, conversations, songs, and interactive activities.

We encourage our little learners to listen carefully, follow simple instructions, understand stories, and share their thoughts and ideas. Fun activities such as storytelling with picture clues, role play, action rhymes, and question-and-answer sessions make listening enjoyable and purposeful. By nurturing attentive listening and comprehension from an early age, we help children become confident communicators, active learners, and thoughtful participants in the world around them.

CLASSROOM CONNECTION

Little hands, curious minds, and joyful learning. Our learners sang, played, spoke, explored, and created through engaging circle-time games, letter-sound activities, and art and craft. These experiences encouraged communication, collaboration, turn-taking, sharing, creativity, and confidence, making every learning moment meaningful and enjoyable.

NURSERY

ENGLISH

Our English sessions were filled with sounds, stories, and hands-on exploration! The story ‘A Sensory Adventure’ was brought to life through an engaging puppet theatre, helping learners discover and understand the functions of their five senses in a joyful and meaningful way. Learners were introduced to the /c/, /k/, and /e/ sounds through interactive activities and picture cards, while the /n/ sound was reinforced through phonics songs and repetition of familiar words. These experiences nurtured phonological awareness, vocabulary development, listening comprehension, oral communication, auditory discrimination, imagination, and sensory exploration, building a strong foundation for early literacy.

MATH

In Math sessions, learners revisited key concepts through engaging, hands-on activities. They sorted objects to recapitulate circles and triangles, while big/small and tall/short were reinforced using concrete objects and flashcards. Learners also completed workbook activities on numbers 1 and 2, strengthening number recognition, counting skills, and fine motor development. These experiences helped learners develop early numeracy, shape recognition, sorting and classification, comparison skills, number sense, counting, visual discrimination, and logical thinking.

THEME

Our little learners were introduced to the concept of family through engaging flashcards, audio-visual aids, and interactive discussions. They identified family members, explored their roles and relationships, and learned about nuclear and joint families through colourful flashcards, visuals, and videos. The activities strengthened their vocabulary, listening, communication, observation, identification, and classification skills, while fostering an understanding of the love, care, relationships, and support shared within a family. Learners also developed social-emotional awareness and a sense of belonging to their family and community.

SHOW AND TELL

Our little learners enthusiastically participated in a “Show and Tell – My Favourite Toy” activity, where they brought their favourite toy and spoke about its name, colour, features, and why they liked it. The activity helped develop their communication, vocabulary, confidence, listening, and turn-taking skills. Through this experience, learners were able to express their thoughts and preferences using simple sentences, listen respectfully to their peers, and build confidence in speaking before a group.

JR.KG

ENGLISH

This week, learners revised the letter sounds s, a, t, i, p, n, c, k, and e through engaging activities and practised writing s and a. They were introduced to “am” and “at” words and revised blends to strengthen their phonics and word-building skills. The concept was reinforced through storytelling with the help of a puppet theatre using the story “Ben and the Golden Rule”, helping learners understand the importance of patience, turn-taking, and good manners. The activities supported the development of phonological awareness, vocabulary, listening, communication, early literacy, fine motor skills, and social-emotional competencies.

MATH

Learners strengthened their understanding of numbers, sequencing, and patterns through hands-on activities and workbook exercise. They practised writing numbers 1–10 and 1–15, identified missing numbers, revised patterns, and recapitulated reverse counting from 10 to 1 using number flashcards. Counting and number-object activities further reinforced number concepts. These experiences developed number recognition, counting, sequencing, pattern recognition, logical thinking, problem-solving, and independent learning skills.

THEME

Learners revised emotions, personal hygiene, good manners, the five senses, and healthy habits through discussions and worksheets. They explored appropriate ways to express and manage feelings and learned about caring for their bodies. These activities strengthened self-awareness, communication, observation, decision-making, critical thinking, and personal care skills, while promoting healthy lifestyle habits and well-being.

SR.KG

ENGLISH

Our learners strengthened their phonics, reading, and writing skills through engaging literacy activities. They practised CVC words with short ‘a’ and ‘e’ sounds, explored rhyming words and word families, and discovered how Magic ‘e’ changes short vowel sounds into long vowel sounds. Through reading, writing, and workbook activities, learners developed word recognition, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and early literacy skills. Creating a Beginning–Middle–End (BME) Chart based on the Healthy and Junk Food story helped learners identify, recall, and arrange events in the correct order, strengthening their sequencing, comprehension, communication, and critical-thinking skills.

MATH

Our little mathematicians revised before, after, and between numbers through workbook and notebook activities. They practised number writing, reverse counting using the Tens and Ones concept, and number names. Pattern activities and shape exploration helped learners revisit the circle and sphere. These experiences developed number sense, sequencing, pattern recognition, observation, logical thinking, and mathematical confidence.

THEME

Learners revisited Hobbies through a rhyme, workbook activities, and an engaging Show and Tell, where they spoke about their favourite hobbies using props. They also revised the five internal organs and explored healthy food choices through the story Healthy and Junk Food. These experiences strengthened vocabulary, observation, recall, communication, reading, writing, self-expression, and confidence.

HINDI

During the Hindi session, our Jr. KG learners were introduced to the names of different colours—लाल, पीला, नीला, हरा, काला, सफेद, गुलाबी, नारंगी, and भूरा—with the help of colourful pictures. They enthusiastically identified and repeated the colour names, strengthening their vocabulary, colour recognition, listening, and speaking skills. The learners also enjoyed reciting the Hindi rhyme “सफेद” along with the teacher, making the session engaging, interactive, and joyful.

PHONICS READING

Nursery- Learners enjoyed reading the story “Bug on a Rug” using the SAAR app. They participated in picture reading, read along with the sentences, and practised the words on page 47. With the support of their parents, learners used their pointer fingers to track the letters while reading and discussed the pictures. The activities strengthened vocabulary, reading fluency, listening, comprehension, picture association, and early literacy skills, helping learners read with greater confidence.

Jr.Kg- Learners enjoyed the story “Tom Cat and Jim Rat” from the Fitzroy Reader. They listened to the story, read along, practised new words, and answered questions based on the story. The activities strengthened vocabulary, reading fluency, listening, comprehension, communication, and early literacy skills, helping learners read and respond with greater confidence.

Sr.Kg- Learners revised the stories “The Animals” and “My Lost Bear” with guidance from the SAAR Fitzroy Reader using the SAAR application. They revisited the pictures, sentences, and key vocabulary from the stories and responded to simple questions. The revision strengthened reading fluency, vocabulary, listening, comprehension, picture association, and confidence in early reading skills.

CIRCLE TIME

Nursery

Learners participated in Brain Gym exercises to improve concentration, coordination, and body awareness. They also spoke about their favourite colours, encouraging language development, confidence, colour recognition, and self-expression.Learners were able to improve their focus and body coordination, communicate their preferences using simple sentences, recognize colours, listen attentively, and express their thoughts with greater confidence.

Jr. KG and Sr. KG

Learners practised the affirmations “I am happy. I am kind. I can learn new things.” They also participated in the breathing exercise “Smell the flower, blow the candle,” helping them relax and focus. The activity supported positive self-expression, emotional well-being, self-confidence, mindfulness, and breath control. Learners were able to use positive affirmations to express their feelings and strengths, practise mindful breathing, regulate their emotions, improve concentration, and develop a positive attitude towards themselves and learning.

ACTIVITY

Nursery- Learners expressed their creativity through journal activities on ‘My Favourite Toy’ and ‘Rainy Season’, nurturing imagination and self-expression. Fun, play-based activities such as sponge squeezing and ball passing filled the classroom with joyful cheers while strengthening fine and gross motor skills, grip, coordination, teamwork, and turn-taking. The significance of Independence Day was discussed as learners participated in a creative craft involving paper folding, fingertip painting, and sticking, further enhancing creativity and hand-eye coordination. These activities enabled learners to develop fine motor control, gross motor coordination, creativity, imagination, social interaction, teamwork, turn-taking, and an understanding of national celebrations.

JR.KG- On the occasion of Guru Purnima, learners were introduced to the importance of respecting and expressing gratitude towards their teachers and all those who guide and inspire them. They reflected on the concept through a creative drawing activity, making the learning meaningful and enjoyable. The children also expressed their creativity by drawing “My Birthday Cake” in their journals. This activity encouraged imagination, fine motor skills, and joyful self-expression.

SR.KG- During activity time, learners revised rhymes and sight words through engaging activities and completed their journals—“The Most Beautiful Butterfly” and “My Favourite Hobby.” They also participated in a special Independence Day activity to celebrate the spirit of patriotism through creative expression. These experiences encouraged learners to express themselves, listen to others, participate confidently, and enjoy learning together.

PLAYLAB

The Play Lab sessions provided our learners with a joyful opportunity to explore and interact with a variety of toys. Through hands-on play, learners engaged in creative thinking, discovery, and imaginative exploration. The open-ended play encouraged them to experiment, make choices, solve simple problems, and express their ideas freely. It was a fun-filled learning experience that nurtured curiosity, creativity, imagination, decision-making, problem-solving, communication, social interaction, and independence, while developing their ability to explore and learn through play.

HORTICULTURE

Nursery –Learners enjoyed watering plants using small watering cans. They practised handling the cans carefully and watering the plants gently. The activity helped develop care and respect for nature, responsibility, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and awareness of plant needs.

Jr.Kg- Learners explored seeds and their uses through a hands-on seed-sorting activity. They observed and classified different seeds based on their size and shape, developing observation, comparison, classification, critical thinking, fine motor, and environmental awareness skills. The activity also helped learners appreciate the diversity of seeds and understand the importance of caring for plants and nature.

Sr.kg- Our little gardeners explored different types of seeds and observed how they change when soaked in water. They independently sowed seeds, watered them, and labelled their pots, eagerly observing the process of germination. The activity helped learners understand that plants need water, care, and patience to grow while developing observation, fine motor skills, responsibility, independence, and environmental awareness.

YOGA

Nursery – Forward Stretch Pose

Our Nursery learners enjoyed practising the Forward Stretch Pose, which helped improve flexibility, balance, and body awareness. The calming activity encouraged relaxation and concentration while developing coordination, confidence, and mindful movement.

Jr. KG – Chair Pose (Utkatasana)

Learners enthusiastically practised the Chair Pose (Utkatasana). The activity strengthened their legs, balance, posture, and body coordination, while enhancing concentration and flexibility. The joyful practice also encouraged confidence, focus, and mindfulness.

Sr. KG – Knee-to-Chest Pose

Learners enthusiastically practised the Knee-to-Chest Pose, developing flexibility, balance, body awareness, and relaxation. The session supported better posture and concentration while nurturing coordination, confidence, and overall physical well-being.

VISUAL ART

Nursery-Topic: Collage
Our Nursery learners enthusiastically explored the art of collage by tearing colourful tinted paper into small pieces and pasting them to create simple shapes. The hands-on activity allowed them to explore colours and textures while expressing their creativity. It strengthened fine motor skills, finger control, hand-eye coordination, concentration, patience, and confidence, while encouraging independent creative expression.

Topic: Elements of Art – Primary Colours
Learners were introduced to the three primary colours—red, yellow, and blue—through interactive discussions, visual aids, and engaging activities. They identified and named the colours, matched them with familiar objects, and completed a colouring activity using primary colours. The experience developed colour recognition, observation, vocabulary, concentration, and creative expression, while building a foundation for understanding colour as an element of art.

Jr. KG- Topic: Piet Mondrian-Inspired Artwork
Our Jr. KG learners explored the distinctive art style of Piet Mondrian, observing his use of straight black lines and primary colours. They created their own artwork using simple geometric sections and red, blue, and yellow. The activity developed shape and colour recognition, pattern awareness, creativity, fine motor skills, and visual observation, while encouraging appreciation of art and artistic expression.

Topic: Elements of Art – 2D Geometrical Shapes
Learners explored common 2D shapes such as circles, squares, triangles, rectangles, and ovals through visual aids and real-life examples. They identified shapes, discussed their features, and practised drawing and colouring them. The activities strengthened shape recognition, observation, vocabulary, fine motor skills, visual discrimination, and creative thinking, encouraging learners to explore shapes confidently.

Sr. KG-Topic– Organic Shapes & Introduction to Artist Henri Matisse

This week, our Sr. KG learners revised organic shapes by identifying and discussing shapes inspired by nature. Through interactive discussions and visual examples, they confidently differentiated organic shapes from geometric shapes.

As part of Art History, learners were introduced to Henri Matisse, the renowned French artist known for his vibrant colours and creative paper cut-outs. They explored how he used simple organic shapes inspired by nature, such as leaves and flowers, to create expressive artworks. The session strengthened shape recognition, observation, visual discrimination, creativity, and artistic appreciation, while encouraging learners to express themselves through art.

STREAM

Nursery – Day and Night

During the STREAM session, Nursery learners explored the basic differences between day and night, identifying sunlight during the day and darkness at night. They classified common day and night activities and investigated soluble and insoluble materials through hands-on exploration. Learners also identified and compared facial features, recognizing similarities and differences among themselves. Learning outcomes and competencies: Learners developed observation, classification, comparison, communication, scientific inquiry, and social-awareness skills while understanding day/night, material properties, and individual differences.

Jr. KG – Weather

During the STREAM session, Jr. KG learners identified different types of weather such as sunny, rainy, windy, cloudy, and snowy, and understood the importance of choosing suitable clothing for different weather conditions. Through a shadow puppet show and The Three Little Pigs, they developed listening, comprehension, visualization, and sequencing skills while understanding the importance of strong and safe homes. Learning outcomes and competencies: Learners developed environmental awareness, communication, observation, listening, comprehension, sequencing, critical thinking, and safety-awareness skills.

Sr. KG – Density

During the STREAM session, Sr. KG learners explored density by observing and comparing different liquids. Through a hands-on investigation, they observed how liquids with different densities form separate layers when combined. Learning outcomes and competencies: Learners developed scientific inquiry, observation, prediction, comparison, reasoning, problem-solving, and communication skills while exploring the properties of liquids.

MUSIC

Nursery

Nursery learners had a joyful and energetic music session this month. They were introduced to a new action song, “Up Up Up and Shake.” The learners enjoyed singing, moving, and following the actions along with the song. They were also introduced to the Shaker and Chimes, which are percussion instruments. The children explored the sounds produced by these instruments and practised playing them with the rhythm. The session helped them develop rhythm, coordination, listening skills, and musical awareness. It was a fun and engaging musical experience for our little learners.

Jr KG

Our Junior KG learners enjoyed learning the new action song “Up Up Up and Shake.” They enthusiastically participated in the actions while singing along to the song. The learners were introduced to the Xylophone, a musical instrument with different notes. They explored the high and low notes by playing different keys on the instrument. They also enjoyed experimenting with colour combinations while connecting colours with different musical notes. The activity encouraged their creativity, listening skills, coordination, and understanding of pitch.

Sr.KG

Our Senior KG learners had an exciting musical learning experience with the new song “Up Up Up and Shake.” They actively participated in singing and performing the actions with confidence. The learners further explored the Xylophone and learned to identify and play high and low notes. Through hands-on practice, they understood that different keys produce different pitches. They also explored colour combinations while working with musical notes. The activities helped develop their musical understanding, concentration, creativity, rhythm, and coordination.

EVENTS AND CELEBRATIONS

Friendship Day – “The Gift of Kindness”

Nursery, Jr.Kg & Sr.Kg: Learners celebrated Friendship Day through fun and meaningful activities. They decorated and exchanged friendship bands, created a Friendship Tree and collaborative mural, and enjoyed a friendship-themed dance session. The activities encouraged kindness, sharing, empathy, teamwork, communication, and respect, while creating joyful memories with friends.

Independence Day-Learners across Nursery, Jr. KG, and Sr. KG learnt about India’s independence struggle, British rule, how India gained independence, the significance of 15th August, the Tricolour Flag, and India’s National Symbols in an age-appropriate manner. They participated in engaging discussions, videos, interactive question-and-answer sessions, and a special assembly. Learners also enjoyed creative activities by making tricolour wall hangings and a tricolour bird craft, while Nursery learners sang “Nanha Munna Rahi Hoon” with actions. The activities helped develop patriotism, awareness of national identity, creativity, and a sense of pride in India.

What you need:

Paper or cardboard, Crayons, pencils, or colors

Recycled materials such as paper rolls, boxes, newspaper, or bottle caps

Optional: leaves, twigs, or other safe natural objects

Choose a fun theme—My Family, Nature, My Dream Garden, or Anything I Like!

Create a picture or collage together using the materials. Encourage your child to choose the colors, shapes, and materials. Give your artwork a name and let your child tell you a little about it.
