Developing Math and Reasoning Skills Through Play
Mathematics and reasoning are crucial skills that form the foundation for a child's academic success and everyday problem-solving abilities. Engaging children in playful activities makes learning math fun and enhances their cognitive development. Parents can integrate learning into daily routines and games, making math a fun and natural part of a child's life. Here are some practical and engaging ways to develop these skills at home.
*Use cooking and baking to teach measurement, fractions, and proportions. Let children measure ingredients and explain the concepts of halves, thirds, and quarters.
*Take nature walks and count different types of plants, animals, or rocks. Discuss patterns in nature, such as the symmetry of leaves or the arrangement of petals. Involve children in grocery shopping. Ask them to help count items, weigh produce, and understand prices and changes.
By integrating math and reasoning skills into playful activities at home, parents can create a rich learning environment that fosters curiosity, critical thinking, and a love for math.

CLASSROOM CONNECTION
Each week, the learners are becoming increasingly expressive and reflective of their educational journey. Their enthusiastic participation in class activities demonstrates their growing understanding and engagement. Teachers are crafting enjoyable and educational activities that empower students to explore topics independently. These experiences not only deepen their grasp of the subject matter but also provide teachers with insights into each student’s comprehension, allowing for timely support and guidance.
TEACHER FEATURE
"Each child is an individual who is eager to learn." It is crucial to establish an atmosphere that promotes inquiry, creativity, and critical thinking to support their learning—asking open-ended inquiries that start with "what," "how," or "why" is one method to achieve this. Children who do this are better able to solve problems and think more carefully about the world around them. Creating avenues for inquiry is also essential. Give your kids the tools and activities to explore and learn via play. This could be anything from involving them in daily chores to making art projects or constructing using blocks. We tend to foster a lifelong love of learning in our kids by making education enjoyable and interesting.

This week, our preschoolers made significant strides in letter recognition and early literacy skills. They devoted a practice session to the letters 's', 'a', and 't', focusing on writing these letters and drawing related objects which also aids in fostering fine motor skills. Additionally, they practiced writing lowercase letters i, n, and p in their notebooks. By learning the blends for "sat," "cat," and "pat," they enhanced their early reading skills. The children also worked on matching uppercase to lowercase letters (S, A, T, P). These activities not only improved their letter recognition but also supported phonology developed in the language domain, enabling them to blend phonemes into words and segment words into individual sounds.
MATH
Cognitive development in math for preschoolers focuses on building the foundational skills necessary for understanding more complex mathematical concepts later on. Counting backward helps children develop a more robust understanding of number sequences stimulating their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. In this cycle, learners were introduced to backward numbers. Numbers 13, 1, and 15 were practiced in the notebook. Learning shapes is a fundamental step in developing geometry skills. Learners were introduced to shape triangle.
THEME
The use of polite expressions like "please," "sorry," "excuse me," "may I," and "thank you" was emphasized. These social graces fall under the domain of social and emotional development, which includes the child's social skills and behaviours. Practising good manners helps learners build strong social connections, enhancing their ability to work and play well with others, and contributes to their overall social and emotional well-being. To develop the learners' cognitive and sensory skills, a recap of the five senses was conducted. The teacher engaged them in various activities to help them understand the importance and function of each sense.
