What do competencies mean in early childhood education?
In early childhood education, competencies refer to the combination of skills, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours that children need to engage with and succeed in their learning environments effectively. These competencies are crucial for a child's overall development and future learning.
Domains and competencies are essential in shaping a preschool curriculum as they provide a structured framework to ensure comprehensive and holistic development in young children. Domains and competencies provide a clear structure for educators to plan and implement activities that meet specific developmental goals. This ensures that all areas of a child's growth are addressed systematically. The world your child lives in is very different to what it was like when you were growing up and is continuing to change. It is no longer enough to just learn “facts”. No one knows exactly what life will be like for today’s children when they become adults, but we do know that they will need to develop a range of key competencies so that they can adapt and function well in the world. These key competencies are thinking, using language, symbols, and texts, managing self, relating to others, participating and contributing.
A curriculum based on domains and competencies equips them with foundational skills and attitudes that prepare them for future academic and life challenges.
