Benefits of Storytelling in Child Development

Philip Pullman once said, “After nourishment, shelter and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.” At the root of it, storytelling teaches us about life, human connection and self-expression. Children are enamoured by the magic of storytelling, as it brings a further understanding of the world around them. Stories can play an important role in early childhood education. Storytelling is a powerful tool in early childhood education, offering a wide range of benefits that support children's development and learning. Storytelling helps children expand their vocabulary, understand sentence structure, and improve their pronunciation. Listening to stories also enhances their listening skills and comprehension. tories transport children to different worlds and encourage them to use their imagination. This creative thinking can lead to innovative problem-solving skills and original ideas. When children are encouraged to tell their own stories, it helps build their confidence and allows them to express their thoughts and feelings. Storytelling is more than just entertainment; it is an essential educational tool that supports various aspects of a child's development, helping them grow into well-rounded individuals.

CLASSROOM CONNECTIONS

The connection between a teacher and learners is one of the most influential factors in a learning environment. This is a key element affecting learners’ progress, engagement of school and academic motivation. Classroom connection has a significant impact on student’s learning. An effective atmosphere in the classroom can make teachers teach proficiently and students learn with ease, leading to a positive and effective environment in the class. This week started the discussion about the monsoon and the creatures of the rainy season was done between learners and the teacher. The teacher also explained the significance of parent-child collaboration by participating in the Chocolate Day event. They enjoyed and relished everything they learnt during classroom connection.

NURSERY

ENGLISH

Introducing the sound /i/ was a fun and engaging process for our young learners. They explored the phonic sounds and associated pictures like ice cream, igloo, and insects. They formed the letter "Ii" using clay and ice cream sticks to reinforce the learning, enhancing their tactile skills. A cotton sticking activity on an igloo drawing was also conducted to strengthen their understanding of the letter "Ii" playfully and interactively.

MATH

Our tiny tots welcomed the bright and cheerful colour yellow! Through a delightful rhyme, they explored the sunny hue, learning about bananas, sunshine, and emojis. As reinforcement, learners participated in a fun water-play activity where they squeezed out yellow-coloured water using a sponge from one tub to another. This activity not only emphasized the colour yellow but also helped develop their fine motor skills. It was a fun and engaging way to introduce a new colour to our little ones.

THEME

Our tiny tots recently embarked on an exploration of the five sense organs. The teacher began by tapping into their prior knowledge, with several learners enthusiastically responding to preliminary questions. Through engaging flashcards and a captivating story, they learned about seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. To reinforce this knowledge, a centre activity was conducted where the learners named and identified each sense organ, making the recap interactive.

JR.KG

ENGLISH

Students were engaged in a picture talk session using the worksheet book. They carefully examined the picture, discussing minute details and describing each element they observed. This activity helps improve their vocabulary, observational skills, and ability to articulate thoughts clearly. Learners also participated in letter identification and matching where they identify and match the uppercase and the lowercase letters. The practice of writing in the notebooks was reinforced with additional exercises to ensure they were comfortable and confident in writing the letter. These activities not only reinforced foundational language skills but also fostered confidence and enthusiasm for learning among our students.

MATH

This week, various manipulatives were used to introduce the colour yellow. Learners participated in a fun and interactive activity where they identified and sorted yellow objects. Additionally, learners also identified and ticked yellow colour objects in their worksheets. With the help of manipulatives, learners were introduced to the circle shape. Learners related different objects in their surroundings to circle-shape, enhancing their understanding of shapes.

The numbers fun for this week included the introduction of numbers 7 and 8 with a counting objects activity. Learners counted different objects like crayons, popsicles, and pencils. This integrated activity not only reinforced color and shape recognition but also fostered enthusiasm and engagement in learning numbers.

THEME

This week our learners embarked on an exciting journey to explore their sense organs. It was a week filled with hands-on experiment activity of exploring their sense of touch through various textured objects. This tactile experience highlighted how our skin helps us feel the world around us. This helps our learners to observe and understand different categories of objects and develop fine and gross motor skills.

SR.KG

ENGLISH

The key to reading well and effectively is, being able to recognize letters and words of the language. Learning CVC words helps to build vocabulary, reading skills, and writing. Introduction of 'a' family words was done which later we also wrote in notebooks to reinforce the understanding. A play-based recapitulation of CVC words was done by engaging learners in learning with fun through the Snakes and Ladder game, where they read a word their dice landed on. Later, learners also wrote these words in their notebooks.

MATH

Counting is a fundamental skill in math, and our learners have been mastering the art of counting backwards from 10 to 1. This not only helps in understanding number sequences but also enhances memory and concentration. Learners were encouraged to count using their fingers toys or objects to visually represent the numbers as they counted backwards. Understanding spatial relationships is another crucial aspect of early learning. We introduced the concepts of "top" and "bottom" to our learners. To make learning more interactive, learners were asked to identify objects around the tree and describe what is on the top and what is at the bottom.

THEME

In our recent sessions, learners were introduced to the basics of keeping themselves clean and healthy through interactive sessions, rhymes, and engaging role plays. Teaching young children about personal hygiene is crucial as it lays the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits. Our goal is to make these practices second nature to our little ones, ensuring they grow up with the knowledge and routines necessary to stay healthy. To reinforce these habits, our learners participated in a fun and educational role-play. They took on various roles that emphasized the importance of personal hygiene and healthy eating habits. This hands-on activity not only made learning enjoyable but also helped them understand the practical application of these habits in everyday life.

ART

Assemblage Art

This week learners explored yarn, with its soft texture and vibrant colours. Yarn can be used to create beautiful and imaginative artworks. Learners used yarn and glue as a medium of art and explored how they work. Sticking the yarn as per the designs made in the book was a fun activity to explore new learning.

STREAM

Nursery –

During the STREAM session nursery learners investigated what is soluble and insoluble with a range of materials and objects. Learners predicted whether the given object would dissolve or would not dissolve in water based on its nature. They understood that soluble substances dissolve in water, while insoluble substances do not dissolve and remain as solids. They explored various materials (e.g., sugar, salt, sand) to determine which ones dissolve in water (soluble) and which ones do not (insoluble).

Jr Kg –

In this week's session, learners had to identify loud and soft sounds in the environment. They understood that loud sounds are associated with strong sources, such as thunder, drums, or shouting and soft sounds are associated with gentle sounds. They explored making soft and loud sounds themselves with the help of shakers.

Sr kg –

This week, our Sr.Kg learners delved into the intriguing world of physics by exploring the concept of 'Force'. The session began with a simple explanation that force is what makes objects move. To make this concept tangible, we used an engaging activity centred around bowling. The learners learned that by rolling a ball towards bowling pins, they apply force to make the ball move. They observed the motion of the ball as it travelled towards the pins and noted how the pins moved when struck by the ball. By participating in the bowling activity, the children could visually and physically grasp how force affects the movement of objects.

HORTICULTURE

By sowing tomato seeds, learners developed basic gardening skills through hands-on experience. This project allowed them to observe and discuss the different stages of a tomato plant's life cycle, from seed germination to fruit production. Handling seeds and planting helped them develop their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Discussing the needs of plants (water, sunlight, soil) increased awareness of the environment and the importance of nature in our lives. Through discussions, observations, and potentially keeping a journal, learners expanded their vocabulary and communication skills. This gardening project provided a rich, hands-on learning experience, helping our young learners grow in many ways.

PLAY LAB

Play labs are vital for fostering holistic child development. They provide a dynamic space where children explore, experiment, and learn through play. Through interactive activities, children develop essential social, cognitive, and motor skills. Play labs encourage creativity and imagination. They also promote emotional well-being by offering a safe environment for self-expression and social interaction. Every week our learners are encouraged to engage in play lab for various free play activities like building blocks, bowling, and pretend play. Such activities help them develop and enhance their cognitive, social, and emotional, as well as physical skills. Truly said, in developing years ‘Play is the way’ in laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

ZUMBA

Nursery

Our Zumba session started with gentle warm-ups to get our muscles ready. Then the learners danced to popular tunes like the "Ula Ula Zumba" song. Then a fun ring game was conducted to make the session more cheerful. Our little learners were thrilled to dance and enjoyed interacting with each other.

Jr. Kg.

Zumba is all about having fun and staying active! Our session began with a playful warm-up song, and then learners danced to the upbeat Zumba tune "Spread Love." We simplified the steps to make them easy and enjoyable for all.

Sr. Kg.

The session began with a rhythmic Zumba warm-up, followed by a recap of the "Zumbazoka" song. The introduction of a new song "Spread Love," was done. Breaking down the steps for dance makes learning fun and easy for all. Our sessions also combined fun ring games, which help reinforce teaching about directions in and out, right and left. Ensuring an enjoyable and enhancing experience for our young learners.

EVENTS

'Chocolate Day'

On July 5th, 2024, Kanakia Kids celebrated 'World Chocolate Day' with a focus on educating learners about the origins and process of making chocolate, engaging them in sensory exploration, and promoting social skills and teamwork through creative activities.

One of the highlights was a healthy chocolate ball-making activity, where parents participated alongside their children. This hands-on experience was well-organized and educational, emphasizing the importance of healthy eating. Parents appreciated the interactive nature of the activity and the focus on nutritious food choices. Overall, 'World Chocolate Day' was a successful and enjoyable event at Kanakia Kids, meeting its objectives and receiving positive feedback from all participants.
