Building Rapport with Kids

Rapport describes a connection with, and an understanding between an individual or group, which can happen naturally or through common interests and ideas. Rapport is a tricky concept, however it is fundamental to effective teaching. It does not include trying to influence what your learners believe or help them become better people. Building rapport can have a profound impact on various aspects of teaching and learning. A strong rapport with teachers can boost learners' motivation. When students feel connected to their teachers, they are more likely to be motivated to participate actively, engage in learning tasks, and strive for success. Rapport grows as a teacher and the learners get to know each other – accepting and celebrating their uniqueness. A Teacher's behaviour that contributes to rapport includes showing their sense of humour, being available for the learners, encouraging class discussion, showing an interest in them, sharing personal stories, and making the learning relevant and relatable to them.

Learners who have a good rapport with their teachers often experience higher-quality learning experiences. They are more satisfied with their learning journey, leading to a deeper understanding of the subject matter and a greater sense of accomplishment. In conclusion building rapport not only strengthens the teacher-student relationship but also plays a vital role in enhancing motivation, comfort, learning quality, satisfaction, and communication in the classroom.
