Enhancing Observational Skills

Observation skills can be defined as visual keenness or the ability to comprehend something through sight. Observation skills is one of the cognitive skills that are tested in children as a development criterion. Enhancing observational skills in kids is crucial for their cognitive development and ability to learn about the world around them. Observational skills help children make connections, identify patterns, and develop critical thinking abilities. The observation skills help them to use all the senses actively. The importance of observation skills in life is that it develops curiosity. Observation skills are fundamental to developing critical thinking abilities. By carefully observing and analyzing information, kids can make informed decisions and draw logical conclusions. The importance of observation skills is that it gives you real-time feedback. You can observe certain things to get answers. Observation skills are an important skill set to master. Though it may take years to master, picking up the skill early on in life will do wonders to your career and life goals. Observation skills make a person alert and ready at any time.

Learners were introduced to the sounds /c/ and /k/ by showing the flashcards and drawing the related pictures on the board. Learners were able to identify the letter and sing the phonic song knowing its sound and its associated pictures. Also for better understanding activities related to the sounds /c/ and /k/ were done in the scrapbook where the teacher wrote the letter /c/ and the learners traced the letter /c/ using their pointer finger and the poster color of their choice. The sound /k/ activity was done in the scrapbook using origami paper where the learners were guided to stick the origami paper in the shape of a kite and detailing using different patterns with crayons or sketch pens.

Math

The introduction of the concept 0f  Tall and Short was done by doing actions and also by singing a song related to the concept. The teacher showed different pictures and objects related to the concept and by teaching this concept, the learners were able to identify and differentiate between the two different objects knowing which is tall and short. The worksheet on the color of the Sun was done by giving them the choice to use crayons and poster colors. A recap of the rhymes Circle and Triangle was done by asking the learners to recite it aloud along with the actions. For a better understanding of the shape, a Triangle shape related worksheet was done where the learners had to identify the triangle shape and color it using a crayon.

Knowing about Likes and Dislikes can be helpful as children learn to cope with situations that they don’t like. Discovering common likes and dislikes opens up a bond between peers. Learners shared the things they liked and disliked from the materials that were displayed at the centre table. They really enjoyed it and were happy to share what they like and what they don't. Sensory play activities stimulate child's senses which supports their brain, language development, gross motor skills, social interaction and problem-solving skills. Learners explored and discovered different materials that were displayed at the centre like wool, rope, cotton, bubble wrap and corrugated sheet. They also learnt new vocabulary like soft, hard, smooth and rough. Recapitulation of ‘Family ‘was done with an activity, where learners had to sort the family stick puppets related to their family members and place them in the house cut out thus knowing the type of family they live in is a joint or nuclear family.

Horticulture

Gardening is educational and develops new skills like responsibility for taking care of plants. It is a fantastic way to connect with nature and watch beautiful flowers and fruits grow. Learners showed enthusiasm to plant seeds in the fertile soil and watch them grow by taking good care.

Zumba

Zumba is the perfect way to incorporate exercise into routines. The little ones danced and had a blast to the catchy tune.  But that's not all, as it was added with an exciting twist. A fun game was played where they had to guess animals by their unique sounds. It was an interactive and energetic way to enhance their letter recognition skills while keeping them active and engaged. It was all about dancing and learning together!

Blending is an effective method that is used to help children learn to read. Through blending, learners can join together individual sound spellings to form a complete word. In this cycle, the introduction of blending words was done. A Zigsaw puzzle of blending words was used to make learning effective and fun-filled. Learners were able to form two-letter and three-letter words with phonic sounds. This skill helps learners to decode words that they are unfamiliar with. Learners were also introduced to the sound /Ee/ through stories and flashcards. Along with writing of the lowercase letter, 'i' was done in the notebook.

Math

The main objective of learning the number system for pre-primary students is to develop a proper understanding of the number system. It enables the students to recognize the numbers by their place value and face value. Learners wrote numbers 5 and 6 in their notebooks. The teacher introduced numbers 8 and 9 with concrete objects and flashcards. Learners counted the number of animals and circled the correct number given in their worksheet book. Learners spoke about their favourite green colour object when the teacher introduced green colour with flashcards. Another engaging activity, based on shapes was conducted in the class where the learners coloured the circles- red, triangles -blue and squares – green using crayons, this helps them to relate basic shapes to their surroundings.

Learners need to develop strategies for managing their emotions so that they can build social-emotional skills. When learners are more socially and emotionally aware and skilled, they can effectively navigate relationships, calm down and problem-solve when challenges arise. Emotions help them (learners) communicate with others, such as when they feel sad and need some help. Emotions also facilitate stronger social bonds. Learners probably use words to describe basic feelings like sad, happy, angry and excited. Understand and relate to how others are feeling. Learners need to express all of their emotions for thinking, problem-solving , and focused attention

Stream

Exposing children to STREAM at a young age supports their overall academic growth and develops early thinking and reasoning skills. The teacher explained Forces and Motion to learners. Push and pull forces were explained to learners by showing them various things where they use these forces. Learners were encouraged to interact with different materials like paper rolls, blocks, toy cars, bottles, boxes, toys, balls, etc. They were asked to push these materials and put a tick against the correct words roll, slide, and spin. They made pom-pom ball shooters and measured the relativity of force-distance by measuring the distance travelled by the pom-pom ball.

Drawing CVC words is a learning activity that helps in improving the reading, spelling, and fine motor skills of the children. This week drawing pictures of CVC words related to “a” family words and writing of “e” family words in the notebook was done. This engagement improved the concept of phonetic sounds and cognitive development.

Picture Talk - Picture talk engages children in conversation and encourages them to express their thoughts and ideas. Keeping this in mind a picture of an Art classroom setting where learners were drawing, and coloring was shown to our learners and they were asked to think critically and make connections to interpret the image. Learners were excited to share their gained knowledge. This helped children to observe things in depth and answer the opened ended questions of the teacher.

Math

Math is an important part of learning for children in early childhood because it teaches life skills. Math helps learners solve problems, measure and develop their own spatial awareness, use and understanding of shapes. Learners were introduced to what comes before, after and between concepts. Activities were carried out to enhance the fun of learning. Additionally, the concept of long and short was introduced using concrete objects, flashcards, and activities (compare objects) where the teacher provided open materials such as popsicles, pipe cleaners, satin ribbons, and wool.

Theme-based teaching is a wonderful way to connect curious minds with any topic, it provides them with the opportunity to have a hands-on learning experience and exposure in their own little ways. This week our learners started by discussing fruits and vegetables, which turned out to be another amazing and interactive topic, where children shared about their expressed their favourite fruit and vegetables. Moreover, they get to know about their peer’s favourite fruits /vegetables and connect on similar choices. Children also learned to write the names of fruits and vegetables in their notebooks. They enjoyed learning and practising the rhyme “ My Hobbies!”. In the following sessions, learners were engaged in a ‘role-play’ for the topic “Health and Personal hygiene”. It was an amazing experience to see learners sharing the best of their knowledge of Health and Personal Hygiene. A special appreciation to parents who put their best into making this activity interesting by encouraging and motivating our young learners to come forward and show their talents.

Literacy Circle

A literacy circle refers to an interactive activity where young children engage in reading, storytelling, and language development exercises. During the literacy circle this week a recap of letter sounds -/s/, /a/, /t/,/p/,/i/,/n/ along with the introduction of letter sounds /ck/ and /e/ with Fitzroys phonic readers application activities was done. The learners were engrossed and excited during the session as learning phonics is a great way to start out on the path to reading.

Sports

Sports play an extremely important part in children's lives by providing all-around development of the child, physically, mentally, and emotionally. In this session to enhance team building, an activity was done wherein learners stood in a row and were passing a ball over the head. This helped learners to strengthen their shoulders and forearms, it also develops collaboration skills.

Music

The music class was all about fun and some practical vocal exercises, building on the basics of Western singing. Rhythm- The learners were engaged in practicing and revising the rhythm exercises to get better on timing. They were able to listen well and clap according to the tempo of the beat.  Practice- The learners were introduced to a new song “ The human body- Internal organs song ”

Event

Children's Council Investiture Ceremony

The investiture ceremony was a remarkable event that aimed to instil leadership qualities and a sense of responsibility among the learners. The Ministers were conferred with badges emphasizing their newfound roles as leaders within the school community. The investiture ceremony took place on 15th July 2023 at the school auditorium. The auditorium was adorned with decorative banners and stage settings that reflected the theme of leadership and authority. The event was attended by learners, parents, and other distinguished guests who were eager to witness this unique investiture ceremony. To make the investiture ceremony memorable, a teacher took on the role of the Prime Minister. The badges were a symbol of honour and responsibility, representing the learners' appointment as leaders within the school. The investiture ceremony also included an oath-taking ceremony was held after announcing the ministers which was led by the Prime Minister. The purpose of the ceremony is to emphasize the importance of the role and the commitment required to fulfil it. The ceremony is an opportunity for participants to reaffirm their dedication to their role and to reflect on the significance of their commitment. The ceremony aimed to inspire and motivate young learners to take on leadership roles with enthusiasm and integrity.
