The wildfire that occurred in Lahaina on August 8th was a devastating event that impacted the lives of many teens and young adults in the community of Lāhainā, Maui. In response to this tragedy, a sponsorship program has been established to provide support and assistance to those affected.

The program offers goodie bags filled with essential items, brand-new clothing, jewelry, electronics, swimsuits, beach gear, shoes, and much more for the youth and young adults affected by the fires, providing some comfort and aid during these difficult times.

The wildfires have undoubtedly caused significant trauma and loss for many residents. These goodie bags can make a world of difference in brightening someone's day and reminding them that they are not alone. A small act of kindness can have a significant impact on the lives of those affected by tragedy.

MEET THE TEENS/YOUNG ADULTS

Profile 1 - Wāhine, 15 yrs old

Kawailani (15), is from Lahaina, Maui. The fire took two homes from her family. She has three siblings and is the second oldest. She is a part of the Hawaiian ensemble at Kamehameha Schools Maui. She is proudly a part of a hula halau and just went through an important ceremony the week after the fire.

Profile 2 - Kāne, 20 yrs old

La'a Kea (20), was born & raised in Lahaina. His Lahaina family (Kaniho) goes back 5 generations to their wahi. The fires have completely destroyed life as he, and so many others from Lahaina, knew it. He & his immediate family lost their Wahikuli home & many sentimental items from beloved family members who passed on. He knows material things can be replaced, & he & his family are so thankful for their lives. 


"The Lahaina community is under a lot of trauma & stress from the aftermath & loss of lives to the fires, & we will never get to experience the Lahaina we all knew & loved so much. Healing will take time for so many of us, but we have hope Lahaina will be rebuilt for the benefit of kānaka and kama'aina of Lahaina for generations to come!"

Profile 3 - Wāhine, 20 yrs old

Nalani Kai (20), grew up in Lahaina, Maui. She lost her home to the Lahaina fire as well as her beloved dogs that were in her house. The whole town she was born and raised in is gone and sadly, some amazing people's lives were lost in this tragedy as well.

Profile 4 - Wāhine, 17 yrs old

Kealoha (17), lived in her home on Lahainaluna road all her life. Her family, like many families in Lahaina, lost their home to the devastating fire. When evacuating, they took the minimum, thinking they wouldn't lose everything. Not only did she lose the house she grew up in and everything in it, but also her car, all her valuables, and the only memories that her family had left of their dad, Marcus, who devastatingly passed away in 2021 from covid.

Profile 5 - Wāhine, 17 yrs old

Keith (17), and her family have lived along Lahainaluna Road for 9 years, after immigrating from the Philippines. She lived in their family home that has housed 3 generations & was owned by her immigrant grandparents. She could not save much & lost many valuable things. She was supposed to start school at Lahainaluna High school as a senior on August 9th, the day after the fire. She's had to transfer to Maui High to continue school in fear that she may not be able to graduate.


"I've made so many memories in our little town of Lahaina, & I will always hold them close to heart. I will forever miss watching the sunset at baby beach & cruising down Front Street with my friends."

Profile 6 - Wāhine, 22 yrs old

Wāhine (22), was born & raised in Wahikuli Lahaina. Her grandparents built their home in the 1950s. Her family is well known in Lahaina as they did numerous community service work for Lahainaluna high school & worked in the hula & music industry. Her house hosted many people over the years & holds a lot of mana there. Her family evacuated, thinking they would be able to return home, so they left only with some essential items. She wishes they could've brought all of their sentimental items. They left her families passed down Kamaka ukulele, 2 passed down basses, her grandma's Hawaiian jewelry & many more things. They're sad but eager to rebuild on their land. She wishes she could look at her home, stand in her driveway, and walk in her front door one more time. Her favorite memories are the late night drives down front street & weekly drives to McDonald's for breakfast with her grandparents. Lahaina Pizza Co was her favorite restaurant. Her mom & dad raised her in Lahaina & her heart resides there.

Profile 7 - Wāhine, 16 yrs old

Anahera (I6), was born & raised in

Lahaina & lived there her whole life except for 3 years when she had to live in Wailuku. The home she lost was her parents dream home, which they went to many county meetings, saved up, & waited 11 years for. Her home was her safe place. Her favorite memory of her house was the parties they always had on their balcony. One time Maoli came and played on the infamous balcony!

Profile 8 - Kāne, 14 yrs old

Kāne (14) was born and raised in Lahaina. He was excited to start his first year as a Freshman at Lahainaluna High School. He and his family were devastated to find the home in Wahikuli, Lahaina that his grandfather, family, and his close friends helped to build, in ashes. He and his family lost everything. This has been their family home for over 35 years, where 4 generations grew up. The memories of growing up and spending time with family in their home will forever be in his heart.

Profile 9 - Wāhine, 18 yrs old

Wāhine (18), and her family lost the life that they spent over the last 30 years building, disappearing in the wind-fueled flames, on August 8, 2023. She was born & raised in

Lahaina right off of Front Street & her family had multiple businesses on Front Street for over 30 years. This tragedy has stripped them from the only life they've ever known. They were forced to leave their belongings, evacuate their home, & watch their home & family businesess burn into the ground with the rest of Front Street town. She know's that the Maui community will come together to rebuild Lahaina town very soon.

Profile 10 - Wāhine, 20 yrs old

Kamahie (20), is currently a junior in college at Linfield University. She is a part of the Women's soccer team at her college. Growing up, she attended school in Lahaina until high school where she graduated from

Kamehameha Schools Maui. Her family lost their home in the Lahaina fire. Her favorite memory & part of Lahaina is how safe she felt going everywhere. She will miss going out to dinner and having beach BBQ's with her family. She will also miss going to Ainakea park with her friends & driving the golf cart as far as they can.


"I will just miss my home in general and all the memories it holds. I love my hometown and will always be proud of my community and where I come from!"

Profile 11 - Wāhine, 21 yrs old

Aloha Joy (21), was born and raised in Lahaina, Maui. She and her family lost their home, cars, and all their belongings. She has 3 other sisters who were supposed to graduate from Lahainaluna High School this year, another sister who was supposed to be a freshman and another to start in middle school. They have lost everything they had for their family.

Profile 12 - Wāhine, 14 yrs old

Wāhine (14), attends Lahaina Intermediate School. She loves the sport jiu jitsu! She also loves bathing suits! She has lost her childhood home and jiu jitsu gym as they were both impacted by the wildfire in Lahaina.

Profile 13 - Wāhine, 16 yrs old

Wāhine (16), is currently a junior in high school. She enjoys being in the water & going to the beach. Due to the fire, she & her family lost nearly everything. They lost their apartment & everything in it, including all of her deceased mothers belongings. This included her ashes, which her dad tried going back for on foot & didn't return to her grandma's for over two hours. Within those two hours, her heart sank, because all she could think of was the worst. Thankfully, her immediate family is all okay, but they did unfortunately lose some relatives to the fire.

During the fire, she could hear cars & propane tanks exploding. She watched as the smoke got closer & closer, to which her family then had to flee to her grandmothers house which also later burned down.


"This is a hard time for not only my family, but everyone in Lahaina, everyone with ties to Lahaina. Lahaina is my home & always has been since I was born, Lahaina is all I know.

Profile 14 - Wāhine, 14 yrs old

Wāhine (14), is from Lahaina, Maui. Due to the fire, her house burnt down, which was filled with many important things that she could not take because she and her family escaped at the very last minute. Her parents are not able to work anymore & her family's hard work is gone.

Profile 15 - Wāhine, 16 yrs old

Daisy Rain (I6), is a student who attends Lahainaluna High School. Sadly, she recently lost her house, like many others, in the Lahaina wildfire.

Profile 16 - Wāhine, 21 yrs old

Wāhine (21), was fortunate enough to get out in time with her 'ohana and their pets. She didn't think the fire was going to reach their home, so they left with only clothes for the night and their toothbrushes. The fire leveled her home with all of her families belongings in it.

"Life has been so different lately, but I am so grateful for the kokua that surrounds Lahaina and it's community!"

Profile 17 - Kāne, 20 yrs old

Kāne (20), lost everything in the fire & only escaped with the clothes on his back and his truck. He was living with his amazing mother who also owned her own small business, Maui Banana Bread Company. Everything his mom has created the last 11 vears has been destroyed with all her supplies. They also lost the only material items left of his father who past away three years ago from cancer. His fiancé & her family were directly affected by the fire & lost their house/sisters house, as they were all living together. His fiancé also lost the only material items left of her father who passed away of cancer 4 years ago. He says that no one could have seen this crazy fire tear apart the whole Lahaina town. His family lost everything, but he is still thankful that they have their lives & is grateful to have gotten out of the fire unscathed.


"I have grown up in Lahaina my whole life & this has affected our community in so many ways, but we will always stay strong no matter what!"

Profile 18 - Wāhine, 16 yrs old

Shannalei (16), like many others in Lahaina, she and her family lost their house due to the wildfires. This loss has impacted her and her family in many ways, not only physically but mentally and emotionally.

Profile 19 - Wāhine, 18 yrs old

Wähine (18), is a Lahainaluna alumni. She graduated this year (c/o 2023). She and her family were one of the victims of the Lahaina wildfire. They lost everything they worked hard for along with their home. She lost her comfort zone and personal space.


"My family and I just want to say thank you in an advance. This will help us so much get back on our feet's. BIG MAHALO <3"

Profile 20 - Wāhine, 17 yrs old

Miranda (15), is a freshman at Lahainaluna High School. She is a part of the Lahaina swim club and was going to start water polo this year for Lahainaluna. She loves the water and outdoors. Her favorite music artist right now is Lana Del Ray, and she loves hanging out with her friends. She and her family lost their home to the fire. Miranda left her home thinking they would come back. She left quickly so she was only able to grab PI's for that night. She lost everything. Their house was burnt to the ground along with the rest of her apartment complex. Although she did lose all her belongings, she is grateful that she didn't lose any family members

Profile 21 - Wāhine, 15 yrs old

Irie (15), lived in Lahaina since pre kindergarten. She attended

Kamehameha III Elementary School until she was accepted into Kamehameha Schools Maui in the 6th grade. She is currently a freshman. She had a large collection of K-pop albums, posters, & merchandise that she lost along with her home. Irie played basketball in the West Maui Youth Basketball League until middle school. She now enjoys playing volleyball, doing judo, and playing roblox with her friends after school.

Profile 22 - Wāhine, 19 yrs old

Theressa (I9), like many others' in Lahaina, her home was destroyed by the fire -the place she grew up in, where her little cousins always went to, and where her brother was raised.

When the fire started, she and her brother got separated from her parents. They both caught a ride with her uncle & her parents left the house last. They were being directed to Front Street where everyone was starting to abandon their cars, so they had no choice but to do that as well. Theressa, her brother, and Uncle were part of the many who were down at the waters at front street for over 6 hours. She was burned, scratched, & bruised, all while carrying their 2 dogs. She lost everything, even the irreplaceable memories from her childhood.

Luckily, all her family members are accounted for, but she notes that this will definitely be a memory that haunts her forever.

Profile 23 - Kāne, 17 yrs old

Kāne (17), was born and raised in Lahaina, Maui. He and his Family lived on Front Street. They had to evacuate with nothing except personal documents. He lost his apartment and sadly left behind his years of memories, collection of plushies, gaming set up, and musical equipment. He is very occupied with Lahainaluna High School, as this is his senior year. He is a part of band, the robotics team, and student council. He plans on going to UH Manoa next year and will be studying mechanical engineering. He would spend the rest of his free time walking down front street, going out to eat, and going to the beach with his friends, along with helping the community any chance he could like Lahaina beach clean up.

Profile 24 - Wāhine, 16 yrs old

Wāhine (16), was born and raised on the island of Maui. The fires had a large impact on her family. She is devastated how it happened and how it destroyed her home and many family members homes as well. She notes that 16 years of her memories are gone, not just hers; also, many other families. She is just glad she and her family are safe and getting help from the people they love. She says "to have what we got now that's all that matters!"

Profile 25 - Kāne, 18 yrs old

Kāne (18), grew up in Lahaina and always "loved cruising in this town. Going through Lahainaluna High School helped him learn how lucky he is to be raised and live in such a historical and important town. When the fire hit, it was a great shock to hi and my family. We lost some loved ones and important places that we share memories with. We lost the ability to live in our house. Now we have to go from place to place in order to have a roof above our heads. Lahaina is very special to not only me but to everyone that has been able to experience the pride of being from there.

Profile 26 - Wāhine, 14 yrs old

Selaima (14), is Tongan, and she and her family are Lahaina residents. Due to the fire, she is now staying at Papakea with her immediate family until they hear more news on their home situation. Her brother's family lived in Lahainaluna and they evacuated to Kahului. She is just happy she is together and safe with her family. She is a freshman at Lahainaluna this year and she was excited for volleyball season. Selaima said there's "no more volleyball season for me, but I'd rather stay with my family and be safe!"

Profile 27 - Wāhine, 17 yrs old

Allyson (17), was supposed to be a senior in high school this year. She says, "not only did we, seniors, lose the first quarter of our senior year we also lost our home". Allyson feels very lucky that her family is all safe. She and her family are scrambling around and trying to get as much help as they can get.

Profile 28 - Kāne, 14 yrs old

David turned 14 yrs old on September 16. He and his mom lost everything in the fire. They had just moved into their apartment not even a year ago. It was hard for them because most of his family also lost their homes. He had to relocate to Oahu for the time being, so they had to leave everything behind and start over. David loves to play soccer and had to put that on pause because of his move.

Profile 29 - Wāhine, 17 yrs old

Kayce (17), has lived in Lahaina, Maui for 8 years. She is currently a senior at Lahainaluna High School. She loves to go on adventures. She also participates in the sport of wrestling. She has lost everything due to the lahaina fire.

Profile 30 - Wāhine, 20 yrs old

Mary (20), has grown up in Lahaina her whole life and graduated from Lahainaluna in 2020. She was working while attending college and has started her 4th year this august at the time of the fire. For Mary and her parents, the fire has completely changed their whole lives and they have lost about everything. She has always loved to surf in Lahaina. She loved to meet the community through surfing and her old job, which was also destroyed by the fire. She has been staying positive despite the circumstances and has been trying to stay busy.

Profile 31 - Wāhine, 13 yrs old

Ana (13), is Tongan and is in 8th grader at Lahaina Intermediate. Ana and her family are fortunate enough to be able to stay in a hotel for now. Her other family members left to stay with family in Kihei. She is glad her family is safe and comfortable. Ana, her older sister, Selaima, and both their parents volunteer at Puuhonoa Honokowai. She enjoys volleyball and flower designs.

Profile 32 - Kāne, 14 yrs old

Kane (14), is a freshman at Lāhainaluna High School and lived in Wahikuli. He attended Maui High for three weeks, beginning a week after the fire outbreak, before he decided to unenroll since there are plans to open Kihei High School for Lahainaluna students. Currently, he Is residing with his aunt, uncle, and two cousins in Kahului. However, he'll soon be returning to the west side & will be staying in hotels with his parents until Kihei school reopens for Lahaina students. One of his cherished experiences in Lahaina was to attend Lahainaluna games, primarily due to the high energy & sportsmanship that is displayed by the Lahaina Community. He loved to cruise around front street with his friends during the weekends.

Profile 33 - Kāne, 19 yrs old

Kāne (19), is a former graduate at Lahainaluna High School, Class of 2022. First off, he would like to say "Mahalo for what you guys are doing and all the help you guys are providing to everyone who was impacted from the fire. He says that it is hard to get over the fact that he & his Ohana don't have a house to go back to anymore. 3 generations of his family lived under the roof of their house. Unfortunately, it's nothing but ashes now. His family has lost everything. Everything that they have been working hard for, for many years is gone. They also had to make the hardest decision of leaving their two pet cats.


"Till this day, I still can't get over the fact that we literally have nothing else left. But, what matters to me is that I still got my family.

Thank you for listening to my short story!"

Profile 34 - Kāne, 22 yrs old

Kāne (22), and his family have been trying to get back on their feet after the Lahaina wildfires have greatly impacted them. He and his family have lost everything they have worked hard for.

Profile 35 - Kāne, 15 yrs old

Zayde (15), was born and raised in Lahaina. The house he grew up in was one of the many that was affected by the fire. He lived by Puamana, and now he is currently staying with family/friends. He has been enrolled at Maui High School, so he does not miss out on anymore classes.

Profile 36 - Wāhine, 21 yrs old

Wähine (21), has lived in Lahaina her whole life. Her childhood home was a 4th generational home that her papa & dad built in Wahikulu that they unfortunately lost due to the fires along with their two cats. She says "we are hoping and praying they are okay but with how long it's been, we believe they went to kitty heaven." She has lived with her mom and dad, her 2 siblings, and her mama & papa. She will be going back up to college as a senior at Western Oregon University on September 17th. Leaving home this time is a little bit harder for her than normal. She will be graduating next June, but will be done a term early. She loves going to the beach, finding shells, going hiking, jumping off waterfalls, and shopping. She enjoys spending time with her friends eating, chasing sunsets, and having late night talks. She is a huge family person & enjoys all the family fun Sundays she haves barbecuing & swimming at Wahikuli post office. She worked on front street at CocoNene, which is based on Oahu & works with local artists in Hawaii It was her favorite part of going into work with the perfect view of the ocean & all the cute things they had in store. She loves to bake, paint, do puzzles, and collect pins. She also loves flowers and plants, anything nature!

Profile 37 - Wāhine, 19 yrs old

Wāhine (19), just had her birthday in August. She is originally from Molokai but relocated to Lahaina, Maui in 2016 for a better sports program. She recently graduated from LahainaLuna in 2022 and was currently working for Billabong on front street. She was living in an apartment with her sister and dad. She loves to be surrounded by family out in nature whether it's fishing, hunting or going to the beach to catch the sunset. At the time of the fire, she was at her brother's apartment, with only minutes to flee and no plans of exit. They left everything & ran on foot to get to safety. Losing each other along the way, terrified & only thinking about the worst. They made it out & are currently staying with family & friends back on Molokai.

Profile 38 - Kāne, 19 yrs old

Kāne (19), was born and raised in Lahaina, Maui. He is a proud

Lahainaluna High School alumni.Currently, he is a culinary student at UHMC. He and his family did not have time to take anything with them when they were evacuating. He is concerned about all the school supplies he lost in the fire (culinary uniforms, non-slip shoes, knives, laptop). Also, he had a large anime funko pop collection that included one of a kind signed funkos. He would spend most of his time walking around Lahaina, working, going out to eat, gaming, and hanging out with friends.

Profile 39 - Wāhine, 13 yrs old

Isabella (13), was born and raised 6th generation Lahaina family. She is in the 7th grade and loves all kinds of sports, wrestling being her primary, but also embraces her girly side

Profile 40 - Wāhine, 18 yrs old

Wahine (18), is in her senior year of high school. She has lived in Lahaina her entire life and could never imagine growing up anywhere else. Going into her last year of high school, she was expecting to stress about the basic things, like college applications, getting to school on time, and doing her homework. Now, it is those things, but so much more. The fire took her home and her dad's truck, her hometown, and the security of always knowing she always had a home to go to in Lahaina. Her tamil home was built by the community, it was ali volunteer work, and her dad and their family/friends put many years, blood, sweat, and tears into building that home. her dad is the first person in his family to own a home, it was such a big accomplishment, and to lose it in this fire is so heartbreaking, words don't explain.


"Like evervone else, I am taking it one day at a time, putting one foot in front of the other to keep going.
