How can I support my child's learning at home?

Take a little time each day to focus on literacy and maths at home.

Here are some suggestions:

Read daily: 

• • Allow time to sit down and enjoy a story together. 

  • Get your child to read their reader (in their book bag) to you.

  • Read together (page by page)

  • You read to your child

Word play:

• • Ask your child what phonic sound they are learning each week and play with words:

    • make a list of rhyming words

    • Find words with the same spelling pattern

    • Write a sentence with a target word

    • Word chains (see back of phonics plus books for spelling ("If you can spell _____, how do you spell ____?)

    • Play Reading Eggs (username and passwords have been sent home).

Maths:

• Ask your child what learning we are doing in class and practise at home.

• Counting forwards and backwards

• skip counting in 2's, 5's and 10's forwards and backwards

• simple addition and subtraction problems to 10, then 20, then to 100.

• Using vocabulary at home to encourage maths (e.g. give half of your biscuit to your brother).
