Music is a significant part of life at KAA. All students in years 7-9 participate in music lessons once per week and we have a thriving programme of instrumental lessons as well as extra-curricular enrichments.

Music is offered as an option both at GCSE level and A Level (both follow the EDUQAS syllabus).

GCSE Music

Pupils study GCSE Music in Years 10 and 11. There are four areas of study in the course, as follows:

  • AoS 1: Musical Forms and Devices
  • AoS 2: Music for Ensemble
  • AoS 3: Film Music
  • AoS 4: Popular Music

Pupils will undertake 3 types of assessment:

  • Performance (30%) - pupils perform solo on their instrument and as part of an ensemble
  • Composition (30%) - pupils compose two pieces, each linked to an area of study above
  • Appraisal (40%) - listening assessment based on the four areas of study and two set works

A Level Music

Pupils study A Level Music in Years 12 and 13. There are three areas of study in the course, as follows:

  • Western Classical Music: The Development of the Symphony
  • Musical Theatre
  • Music in the twentieth-century

Pupils will undertake 3 types of assessment:

  • Performance (35%) - pupils perform solo on their instrument or voice for at least 10 minutes
  • Composition (25%) - pupils compose two pieces, once Classical piece, one free choice
  • Appraisal (40%) - listening assessment based on the areas of study and a set work: Haydn Symphony No. 104
