Employing Geospatial Awareness in the Classroom

With the world becoming increasingly globalized it is important to instill geospatial awareness across subjects for students. There are a variety of ways to ensure students gain this key perspective, however, below I will highlight computer applications that do a good job at teaching and creating an interactive experience for students.

Google Earth Education contains lesson plans and interactive material teachers can use in a variety of subjects to teach students about issues in a global context. The lesson plans generally require a computer that has access to the internet so that students can use Google Earth as they work through the modules.

Voyager allows students to explore historical events, scientific principles, and culture by exploring the world on Google Earth while learning facts and interacting with modules to help them learn with a global mindset while being engaged with the material.

By using this students can gain JavaScript coding skills, design their own research project where they test hypothesis through analysis of geospatial datasets, and overall gain valuable life skills through the process.

Google Earth Engine is a Geospatial analysis platform that contains datasets that can be used for a variety of purposes such as disease risk mapping, tracking geographic changes in coastlines or glaciers, assessing earthquake risks, etc. The video below from their site brushes over this.

Google Arts and Culture is a site with a compilation of art organized by time period and style, historical events, and cultural undertakings.
