Course Description: During this school year, students will be exploring and investigating many different areas of science including the scientific method, earth and space science, heat and energy, electricity, atmosphere and weather, and some concepts related to biology. The course will be divided into 13 basic units with technology, engineering, inquiry, and design integrated throughout the course.

To supplement these units, students will be participating in science labs as well as projects/presentations throughout the course to help them master the standards. Each grading period there will be one significant project. Projects will be student driven and based on the standards covered during that grading period. Students will participate in a lab safety course within the first week of school and will need a lab safety contract signed by a parent/guardian before they are allowed to conduct any labs.

Canvas: Kingsport City School system is using a learning management system called Canvas. This is an internet-based learning system and secure social network that enables schools to implement a successful online academic program. Canvas equips schools to host online courses to make them more interactive. It provides an easy-to-use interface for students and parents to use at home. You may find the link to Canvas on the Kingsport City Schools page under “Students”.

Assignment Books: Students will be given agenda/assignment books the first day of school. They should develop the habit of filling these out daily at the beginning of science class each day. This book should contain the most current information and are another means of communication between home and school. Please be sure to ask to see the assignment book every day.

Textbooks and Journals: The textbook we will be using this year is titled: Holt Science & Technology. However, We rarely use the textbooks since we have many more up to date sources available. We have a classroom set that is available to reference. We will be using a digital scientific journal this year. Students will create and use these extensively throughout the year. They will provide easy access to their notes, labs, study guides, and anything we do in class.

Grading Requirements:

50% Tests

30% Projects, Labs, Quizzes

20% Scientific Journal, Participation, Homework & Classwork

Assessments/Evaluations: Students will engage in a variety of activities including tests, projects, quizzes, in-class assignments, homework, and labs. Some assessments will consist of rigorous reading and writing activities that require students to use higher order thinking skills. Most of the tests are “cumulative” in nature meaning that they include previously learned skills as well as the information we have just finished studying. For example, the Ch. 2 exam may also include several concepts from Ch. 1. Performance-based evaluations will also be given at various times throughout the course.

Field Trips- During the year we may take one field trip that pertains to our science curriculum. Individual students’ participation in field trip activities is at the principal’s/teacher’s discretion. Academic, behavior/discipline, and school attendance issues may affect eligibility to participate in field trips.

Tutoring/Extra Help. Afternoon tutoring times are M-F 2:45—3:10 pm in the JSMS library unless otherwise posted.
