About Us 

Dear EVHS Sundevil Students and Parents,

Welcome back to another exciting school year at Espanola Valley High School! We are thrilled to greet

you as we embark on what promises to be an enriching and transformative year for our school

community.

For those who may not know me, my name is Cynthia Bond, and I am honored to serve as your principal

this year. With over 20 years of experience, my journey in education has included serving as principal

and assistant principal at high school and middle school levels, an instructional mathematics coach for

secondary schools, and as an English and Mathematics teacher at secondary level. Additionally, I had

the honor of being selected for the Leadership Institute for Teachers (LIFT) with MC2 cohort, which has

further strengthened my commitment to educational excellence.

At Espanola Valley High School, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where every student can

thrive. Our team of educators is committed to your child's academic success and personal growth. This

year, we will focus on several key areas:

• Literacy Across the Curriculum: We will enhance literacy skills in all subject areas, ensuring that

our students are not only proficient readers and writers but also critical thinkers who can apply

their skills across various disciplines.

• Student Engagement: We aim to make learning both relevant and engaging, encouraging our

students to actively participate and take ownership of their education.

• College and Career Readiness: Preparing students for their future paths is a top priority. We

provide college dual credit opportunities as well as resources and guidance to help students

explore and plan for college and career opportunities.

We are proud of our diverse population of students and teachers, which enriches our learning

environment and prepares our students for success in a global society.

To kick off the school year, we invite you to our Back-to-School Block Party Open House on August 8,

2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. This event will be a great opportunity for you to meet our dedicated staff,

learn more about our programs, and connect with fellow parents and students.

• Bilingual & EL Services: Española Public Schools implements a Heritage Language (Spanish or Tewa) instructional programs at all school sites and at most grade levels (K-12) as staff is available. Española Public Schools also offers English Language Development (ELD) to English Learners (ELs) as needed at all school sites. • Indian Education Services: Española Public School's Indian Education Department strives to provide a culturally-appropriate and responsive educational experience, while providing a quality education for the capacity and sustainability of our Native American students and their tribes, while providing and strengthening community, cultural relations, and understandings within the Española Valley. • HOPE Program: The Homeless Opportunities = Power in Education program supports students who are experiencing unstable housing, doubled-up situations, homelessness or inadequate living conditions. HOPE strives to improve training, identification, enrollment, stability and success in school from pre-school to high school to post-secondary education.  Students Living in unstable housing or in doubled up situations may be eligible for support services at their school sites.  Click here for more information.

• Title I Program: Title I provides financial assistance to districts and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards. Our school utilizes its Title I funding to provide students with access to technology and classroom resources. Click here for more information.

• GEAR UP Grant: Gaining Early Awareness & Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) New Mexico is a seven-year initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Through this grant, Española Public Schools will create an intentional structure of support that fosters student success in a postsecondary career regardless of race and socioeconomic status. GEAR UP will work with the staff at EVHS and CFVMS to create engaging opportunities that center on the theme of college and career readiness.   Click here for more information.

• Upward Bound: Provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.

• AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a nonprofit college-readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills. 

• LINK Crew: A high school transition program that welcomes freshmen and makes them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their high school experience. Built on the belief that students can help students succeed, Link Crew trains members of the junior and senior classes to be Link Leaders. 

• MESA: Provide the support for historically underrepresented students to develop academic and leadership skills, increase educational performance, and gain confidence in their ability to compete professionally in the STEM fields.

• National Honor Society: The National Honor Society (NHS) elevates a school’s commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four pillars have been associated with membership in the organization since its inception in 1921.

• Teen Court:  A problem-solving court within the juvenile justice system where teens charged with certain types of offenses can be sentenced by a jury of same-aged peers.

• JROTC: Program prepares students for leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities and privileges as Americans. The mission of JROTC is to motivate young people to be better citizens.

• DUAL CREDIT: Refers to students taking courses concurrently at two separate institutions, while dual credit refers to students completing a single course to earn academic credits that are recognized by two or more institutions.

• AP COURSES: A program in the United States and Canada created by the College Board which offers college-level curricula and examinations to high school students. American colleges and universities may grant and course credit to students who obtain high scores on the examinations.

• Student Council: The purpose of the student council is to give students an opportunity to develop leadership by organizing and carrying out school activities and service projects. In addition to planning events that contribute to school spirit and community welfare, the student council is the voice of the student body.

• School Based Health Program:  Espanola Public Schools has partnered with El Centro Family Health to provide healthy programs for students, are managed by certified community health workers. These programs can help needy students with food assistance, housing assistance, transportation, care coordination, nutrition and fitness.
  Available to all students, district faculty & staff members.

• Bilingualism/Biliteracy Seal Program:  Española Valley High School is committed to the preservation, revitalization, restoration, and maintenance of Spanish and Native Languages. The EVHS Seal of Bilingualism-Biliteracy Program is part of that commitment, promoting excellence by building upon the rich cultural assets of all students while advancing the mastery of two or more languages (Spanish/English and Tewa/English).

• Upward Bound at Northern New Mexico College: Upward Bound is a FREE support and academic preparation program for college-bound Freshmen and Sophomores at Española Valley High School. This program is sponsored by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

• NMAA Activities: The New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates interscholastic programs for junior and senior high schools in New Mexico.  As an NMAA participating school, EVHS offers the following non-athletic activities:

• NMAA Sports: The New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates interscholastic programs for junior and senior high schools in New Mexico.  As an NMAA participating school, EVHS offers the following athletic activities:

New Mexico Vistas, is a project of the NM Public Education Department.  Vistas is a new school portal that celebrates our schools' successes and helps identify those in need of additional support. NM Vistas replaces the A-F school grading system and allows families to review school data, insights, and offerings to make informed school choice decisions. This new school portal will provide the elevation needed to see the whole picture of our schools and the context to understand where we’ve been and where we’re going.
