Bailly STEM Academy has adopted several curricular resources to help support STEM learning. The two main pieces of curriculum we have settled upon are Project Lead the Way and CREATE2THINK.
Project Lead the Way curriculum was initially selected as the curriculum of choice due to its proven track record of helping students to succeed in a project based learning environment. PBL is known to be a medium of choice by educators when desiring to transfer hands on, critical thinking, and creativity skills to learners.
CREATE2THINK, a new curriculum was settled upon for the creation of three new courses in the 2021-2022 school year at Bailly. We chose this curriculum based on the the need for our students to have more hands on project work at their fingertips. Additionally, the alignment of the units to the math curriculum maps teachers at Bailly worked to create last year made it a natural fit.
At least 50 percent of planned, integrated STEM curriculum is evidence-based
Bailly STEM Academy implements STEM units using both PLTW and CREATE2THINK evidence-based curriculums to ensure students are receiving quality STEM instruction.
This chart is a screenshot from the CREATE2THINK website reflecting the units available for middle school. Bailly STEM Academy has chosen from these to build their implementation plan.
The CREATE2THINK STEM Curriculum follows a framework based on the 5-E Lesson Model. Within this framework, students:
Tackle the Problem
Hunt for Information
Interpret and Synthesize Others' Views
Navigate New Ideas
Keep Refining and Sharing
This curriculum is utilized at Bailey STEM Academy, not only teach science, but also to integrate STEM and engineering practices.
The attached document and slide deck demonstrate the connection between CREATE2THINK and the 5E Model.
CREATE2THINK 5E Curriculum Model Alignment
The research brief used below was utilized to help, not only in the development of CREATE2THINK, but also supported in the selection of why Bailly decided to use it as a school-wide curriculum to build critical thinking skills in their students.
The attached document demonstrates evidence to support the implementation of PLTW at Bailly. In our goal to pursue PBL learning opportunities for our students, PLTW has a proven track record, not only in student engagement, but also in driving interest in STEM careers.
Elementary and Middle School: Standards-based computer science content is incorporated into the school curriculum for 100 percent of students
CS Course Enrollment
100% of Bailly STEM Academy students are enrolled in computer science courses. The buttons below link to the rosters for each class.
As evidenced below on the Specials Master Schedule, Bailly STEM Academy is providing Computer Science instruction to all students at all grade levels on a weekly basis.
Standards based Computer Science content is imbedded within each CREATE2THINK unit in which 100% of students experience weekly.
Students in the 6th 7th and 8th Grade all have opportunities to learn coding through their computer science elective. The CS class uses Code.org to teach standards based science instruction.
Employability Skills Standards, based upon the appropriate grade band, are integrated into the school curriculum for 100 percent of students
Implementation Plan
Below is the CREATE2THINK Implementation plan created by Bailly STEM Academy. These units are implemented at all three grade levels - 6th, 7th, and 8th - for all students. 100% of CREATE2THINK units incorporate employability skills in every unit.
CREATE2THINK incorporates Employability Skill Standards in every unit for 100% of students.
Sample of Employability Skill Standards incorporated into 6th grade units. 100% of CREATE2THINK units includes Employability Skills.
General education teachers are connected with appropriate special education teachers and support services teachers (ENL, Interpreters, etc...) for necessary material development and refinement for diverse learners based upon their understanding of students' academic needs
Teachers responding to this survey question, shared their frequency of planning with resource teachers. We will continue to encourage collaboration with all resource teachers during our PLC meetings going forward.
In order to address the needs of diverse groups of learners, each phase in CREATE2THINK comes with modification ideas for the teachers.
At least 75 percent of teachers use a variety of assessment methods for students to demonstrate STEM learning
Teachers in Science, Engineering, Computer Science, Math, and Literacy courses use multiple forms of STEM centered assessments. These assessments are blended across subject areas and are built on Indiana Academic Standards. 100% of teachers using the CREATE2THINK curriculum utilize the assessments within each unit.
Variety of Assessments Used
All teachers at Bailly STEM Academy use a variety of assessments within their classrooms. Below is a list of example of the assessments used.
