05/07/18 Today a student asked, "What makes the strawberry turn from white to red?" .... Time to do some research.
05/04/18 Our strawberries are growing like crazy! We were not sure they would work because you have to monitor the pH carefully (between 5.8 and 6.2).
It's been fun to watch the flower transform into a tiny white berry.
03/07/18 5th graders share some of their leaves with Maggie Lena, class guinea pig in Ms. Roesch’s room.
03/05/07 Light Experiment Results
03/02/18 Look at our long, white roots. They are growing like crazy!
02/26/18 Our plants are getting long and lean. The hydroponics guru at 5th Season Gardening says that our plants are trying to get more light. He suggested curling up the stems and bury them with only a few leaves sticking out and lower our lights.
02/19/18 Our plants are finally starting to really look like lettuce. Some of the 4th graders tried a sample…... We think it will taste better with ranch dressing!
02/05/18 We set up an experiment to explore which lights help plants grow faster: colored LED or white fluorescent? These are two 5th grade seedlings from two lettuce seeds planted the same day. We placed one under the LED lights and the other under the fluorescents. Check back to see what we discover.
The water and nutrient level comes up to the bottom of the net pot. An air pump feeds oxygen and carbon dioxide to the plants’ roots via an air stone.
We found a soil grow table in our storage shed and converted it to hydroponics. The top three shelves have white fluorescent grow lights and the bottom has colored LED lights.
02/08/18 Transplanted lettuce, etc. from plastic bottles into the vertical grow table.
01/28/18 We transplanted our seedlings into plastic 2 liter soda bottles with a wick, then changed the design to net pots resting in a cap. The water and nutrients just touch the bottom of the net pot.
(Baby lettuce…. Isn’t it cute!)
01/07/18 We planted our lettuce seeds.
