Class overview + Philosophy
Photography is more than capturing a moment—it's about telling stories, exploring perspectives, and creating meaning. As an academic, teacher, and an artist, I believe in fostering a learning environment where students not only develop technical proficiency but also cultivate their unique creative voices.
In the Photography 1-4 program, students engage with the medium as both a craft and an art form. We explore the foundational principles of camera operation, composition, and editing, and progressively delve into advanced techniques like double exposure, appropriation, and abstract photography. Each level builds on the last, encouraging students to push boundaries and think critically about the role of photography in culture and society.
I emphasize the importance of experimentation and personal expression, guiding students to see the world through a photographer's lens while developing a professional skillset. Through hands-on projects, collaborative critiques, and the study of historical and contemporary photographers, my students learn to articulate their ideas and contribute meaningfully to visual culture.
Whether students pursue photography as a hobby, a career, or a tool for self-expression, my goal is to equip them with the confidence and skills to make impactful images that resonate beyond the classroom.
