I don’t take your trust for granted. I understand that each student is someone’s baby.
Relationships are key. I will work hard to build our relationship.
Communication is crucial for us to be able to build relationships. I will do everything I can to keep you informed about what is happening at school. In fact, I frequently Thread (@hoosjon21) and Instagram (@hoosjon21) pics and videos of my classes at work. My email is jbarber@k12albemarle.org, and you can call me through the main office at school (823-4393). I genuinely want you to contact me when you have questions, comments, or concerns.
I appreciate parents who advocate for their child. As long as we both listen to each other, I know we can work to overcome any situation or issue.
I want your child to succeed.
We will have fun.
It may take me a few weeks to get to know each child socially, emotionally and academically. Please be patient with me. I will focus on getting to know your child’s social and emotional needs before worrying about academics. The learning will happen but not before the relationships are built.
I don’t believe in traditional homework. Most days I suggest playing outside as homework because play is a child’s work. Read to (or with) your child every day. That is the only at-home academics I would suggest on a daily basis.
I believe in letting students re-do, fix, and improve their designs and creations for a better grade. Iteration is one of the main skills I hope to teach your child.

Dear Parent/parents/guardians (Link),
My first assignment is to email me at jbarber@k12albemarle.org . This is partly so you can tell me something relevant about your child and partly to start a back and forth conversation that lasts the whole time that they’re in my class … an introduction, basically. It can be any 3 things or it can be these three:
What does your child like to be called? (If you put this in the subject line, that would be helpful)
What is something that y’all did together this summer?
What is something that your child is good at that I might not know from a casual meeting?
I look forward to hearing from you! Thanks!

TinkerCad Permission Form
During this class, your child will have the opportunity to use TinkerCad, a web-based tool used for 3-dimensional design and 3d printing, as well as virtual microcontroller use. Before implementing TinkerCad into our classroom, we need your permission, based on our policies and our commitment to digital citizenship. It is also important that you are aware of how we will support your child when using TinkerCad and how this resource connects to their learning.
In order to ensure that your child, their personal information, and their schoolwork are all safe while using TinkerCad, we have thoroughly reviewed its Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. This rigorous process “vets” the resource to verify the following:
Your child still owns their data.
The resource will not sell your child’s data.
The resource will not share your student’s data unless it is with a 3rd party explicitly for purposes of operating the resource. (For example, when an Amazon order is fulfilled by a 3rd party seller, the seller receives your payment information.)
The resource is fully compliant with the Child’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
The resource is age-appropriate.
The resource does not display excessive or inappropriate advertisements.
While we have verified the safety of this resource, you can view the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy at: https://www.autodesk.com/company/legal-notices-trademarks/privacy-statement/childrens-privacy-statement. We have also prepared this Family Field Guide to ACPS Technology where you will find information about digital citizenship and web safety here: bit.ly/familyfieldguide
I am excited about the opportunities TinkerCad will provide our classroom. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me at jbarber@k12albemarle.org.
Please sign, date, and have your child return this permission slip to me as soon as possible.
Best,
Jon Barber
