Charles Jabour (he, him, his) is the Theatre Teacher at Somerville High School and the Founder and Faculty Advisor of the Highlander Theatre Company. As a young person, he found a welcoming and supportive community in school theatre programs. Today, he is committed to creating those spaces for all young people. His colleagues call him Charlie and his students call him Jabour.
Charlie has been involved in educational theatre for over 20 years. He discovered his love for directing when he found himself relocated to a high school without a theatre program. Without anyone else to direct the plays, he decided to do it himself. He eventually had the opportunity to perform, write, and direct professionally before graduating from college with degrees in Arts Management and Theatre.
Prior to his tenure with the Somerville Public Schools, Charlie worked as a performing arts programmer and producer. As a the Producer of Live from the NYPL, he oversaw the flagship public program of The New York Public Library. Other projects include the Margaret Mead Film Festival at the American Museum of Natural History, and many theatre, dance, and music programs at the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art.
In 2013, he was enlisted by families at the Kennedy School in Somerville to support a new after-school theatre program. Since then, Jabour has directed and produced over 30 productions for the Somerville Public Schools and developed the Theatre Arts program at Somerville High School. He tells his students as often as he can that he gets to come to his dream job every day.Â
Mr. Jabour holds a Bachelors in Arts Management from Eastern Michigan University (2010), a Masters in Theatre Education from Emerson College (2015) and a Masters of Fine Arts in Applied Theatre & Theatre Education from Emerson College (2022). In 2016, his graduate work on cultural identity development was awarded an honorable mention by the American Alliance of Theatre Education (AATE). Since 2022, he has served as a Teacher Leader for the Educational Theatre Association on the Connected Arts Network initiative.
