The Read Aloud book choice winner is...

All three books got A LOT of votes, so if you wanted to read one of the books that didn't get picked, you should! :)

(The other two book choices were Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling, and The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fforde)

Read Aloud will start tomorrow (Wednesday 4/1)! I will probably read about 2 chapters a day (they're pretty short chapters) and I will post the videos in our ELA Google Classroom. You can watch daily and send me questions/comments, or if you ever miss a chapter you can always go back and watch it. All of the videos will be there!

Can't wait to read with you all!!!

Friday 1/24 - ELA Persuasive Posters are due Monday 1/27 in class!

Students will need to have their research packet completed to turn in on Monday as well (but they should already have that done).

Students will not be presenting their posters on Monday, but instead we will be doing a classroom poster walk around. Everyone will get to walk around and see all of the other students’ posters, leave positive post-it comments, and then analyze and reflect on the persuasive strategies used.

Monday 1/6 - SpringBoard Unit 3 (Persuasive)

Tuesday 12/17 - Essays due tomorrow!!!

Today the 6th grade students are typing up their 5-paragraph essays. They will finish typing tomorrow, do some final edit/revising if needed, then print it out and turn it in tomorrow by the end of class.

Thursday 12/12 - Explanatory Essay Writing

This week, we have begun writing our final essays for this unit. The assignment is: Write a 5-paragraph explanatory essay explaining how people can enhance or improve their lives through observing and interacting with animals.

On Monday this week, we brainstormed together as a whole class, and came up with a plethora of ideas. The students then chose the three topics they wanted to use for their essay's body paragraphs.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, they completed a body paragraph graphic organizer. They spent class time on Tuesday and Wednesday searching for good textual evidence from the MANY sources we have read over the last three weeks. Then they filled out their topic sentences, details/examples and quotes, and finishing with the anchor/concluding sentence.

Today, their job is to take their amazing graphic organizers and turn them into a rough draft of their three 7-10 sentence body paragraphs. They have a Body Paragraph packet that they should be writing in. If they don't get it done in class today, they need to finish the three body paragraphs for homework tonight.

During this week and next with our essay writing happening in ELA, if students fall behind, it will be hard for them to have a good complete essay by next Wednesday when it is due. So it is very important that they get their body paragraphs done tonight.

Tomorrow we will be learning how to write a good Introduction and Conclusion paragraph. Monday they will be editing and revising, then Tuesday and Wednesday next week they will be typing their final essay, making any final corrections/revisions, and turning it in by the end of class on Wednesday 12/18.

Thursday 11/21 - SpringBoard Unit 2 (Explanatory Writing)

Monday 11/18 - Book Report Project Presentations!

Presentations start today!

Wednesday 11/13 - BOOK PUBLISHING REMINDER

Students have been working on their illustrations today in class and will continue with them the rest of this week. We are finalizing everything this week and next! Then we are sending in the box with all of our publishing materials and parent order forms on Thursday next week.

Book Order Forms need to be turned in ASAP! The order form deadline is Tuesday, November 19th! But the sooner, the better.

Please send back your order form, even if you are not ordering a book. There is a "No" box to check at the bottom if you are not ordering one, and then sign the bottom. All order forms need to be turned in with our publishing materials.

***If you are unable to purchase a book, but would still like one, please contact either:

We have scholarships available to cover copies of the books for those who may need extra assistance, we just need to know how many and who might need them.

The students are all VERY excited to see their work in a published book!!!

Wednesday 11/6 - Book Report Projects!

This week students have begun working on their independent reading book report projects. Instead of doing the classic essay style book report, these book reports are more artistic and creative projects. They got to choose what project they wanted to do from the following five choices:

  • Song/Rap/Poem
  • Character Diary
  • Collage/Painting/Artistic poster
  • Act out a scene
  • 3D triarama (pyramid diorama)

They have a bright blue sheet in their binders with an explanation and rubric for their specific project.

Many students have already finished their books, but some students are still finishing the books they want to use for their projects. They will be using class time this week (and time at home) to finish their books, and need to have those done by Friday this week so that they can start work on their projects.

We began working on the projects in class today, and will have some class time this week and next week as well. We won't, however, be working on the projects every single day, so they will likely need to work on it at home too.

Book Report Projects are due Monday, November 18th!!!

Tuesday 11/5 - Book Publishing!

The 6th graders are currently working on making their own published class anthologies of short stories!

Each of the different ELA classes will be making their own book, filled with the short stories they have been writing over the last three weeks. Over the next two weeks, we will be working on formatting and adding illustrations to their stories, and finalizing everything to send in to the publishing company.

We are publishing them through a company called Studentreasures Publishing. You are able to purchase a copy of your child's class book if you would like!

I sent forms home with your student on Monday this week. Please send back the forms even if you are not purchasing a book (there's a "No" box to check at the bottom). I need to send in all of the forms to receive a free copy of each of our published class books for the class library.

** ALL order forms are due back by Tuesday, November 19th **

We are so excited for all of the 6th graders to become published authors!!!

Tuesday 10/22 - Editing and Revising

Today in class we learned about Editing and Revising, using the mnemonic devices CUPS (editing) and ARMS (revising).

When editing they should check for:

  • C - capitalization
  • U - understanding/usage
  • P - punctuation
  • S - spelling

When revising they should:

  • A - add
  • R - remove
  • M - move
  • S - substitute

The 6th grade students then started editing and revising their short stories with their peers in class today, and will be continuing to work on this tomorrow and Thursday.

Final short stories are due on Friday 10/25 by the end of class!!!

Thursday 10/17 - Short Story Drafting

This week the students have chosen which story they are going to write for the short story assignment, and have started working on their rough draft. We will continue working on these stories all of this week and next. This week's goal is to get the rough drafts done, then next week we will be working on going back and editing/revising (adding more, changing things, fixing mistakes, etc).

Students may need to work on these stories some at home over the next week. They are currently typing them in a google doc which they can access through their Google Drive account (using their school log-in information). I sent home a bright green instruction sheet with those who said they may need help/instructions for how to access their Google Drive from home.

The final short stories will be due next Friday 10/25!

Friday 10/11 - Brainstorming!

The 6th graders have begun the next part of our Narrative unit where they will be writing their own short stories! This is something we will be working on for the next 2-3 weeks.

This week on Wednesday, Thursday and today, we started brainstorming ideas and began drafting the beginnings of some different stories. We used the pictures and captions from the book The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, by Chris Van Allsburg, to get ideas for short stories. We also did another brainstorming/drafting activity today where they rolled some dice to see what genre and theme they were assigned for their new story.

We will be brainstorming and drafting the beginnings of probably 5 or 6 different stories. Then, they will lay out all of their story ideas/beginnings, read them, and choose their favorite one to continue writing!

Definitely ask your student to see what pictures they got in class, and have them tell you their story ideas they are working on based off of the pictures. I am loving seeing all of their imaginative and creative ideas!!

Wednesday 10/2 - Unit 1 Test Tomorrow!

The students are going to be taking the SpringBoard Unit 1 Test tomorrow in ELA class. The topic for this unit has been Narratives. Here are some things they have been learning and should know for tomorrow's test:

  • The Elements of Plot → Plot Mountain!
  • Point of View (1st, 2nd, 3rd)
  • Characterization
  • Theme
  • Personal Narrative (Incident-Response-Reflection)
  • Types of conflict → internal and external
  • Dialogue
  • Using Evidence (quotes from the text)

They will be taking the test on their online SpringBoard account, but will have paper copies of the different texts used in the test if they would like to highlight/underline/mark-up the texts like we have been practicing in class.

Monday 9/30

I passed back two things in class today that I graded over the weekend (one in class assignment and one quiz). Students should be showing you their grades/work tonight.

1.) Two Plot mountain worksheets (see below)

2.) Plot Elements & Theme Quiz

Thursday 9/26 - Plot Mountain with movie shorts

Yesterday and today, we have been analyzing the elements of plot by watching some movie shorts. The students were given a plot mountain worksheet, and they have to fill in the 6 elements of plot, as well as identify the theme in the movie short.

Yesterday's movie shorts:

Today's movie shorts:

Tomorrow there will be a Quiz on Plot Elements & Theme. Students should look over their notes and examples in their binder to prepare for the quiz.

Monday 9/23 - Plot Elements

Scholastic Book Orders!!!

The 6th grade students have been given some Scholastic Book Clubs catalogs and have the opportunity to order books if they would like. You have two options for ordering:

1. You can fill out the paper order form on the back of the catalog and send it back with the money for your books (or a check made out to Maggie Dunleavy).

2. You can go online (https://clubs.scholastic.com/) and type in our class code J3J4J and complete your purchase online.

Either way, your order will be included in our 6th grade class order which will all be shipped to school together. The books will be passed out in class once they arrive.

This is a great way to get students interested and excited about books! AND we earn Scholastic Book Clubs points for every purchase, so we can get new and exciting books for our 6th grade class library :)

All Book Orders due by Monday, SEPtember 30th!

Monday 9/9 - Independent reading

We have begun our independent reading for the year, and the 6th graders have been given a bright orange reading that they will keep in their binders and track all of the books that they have read throughout the year. We will also be starting a 6th grade WALL OF BOOKS! Whenever they finish a book, they will fill out a mini book review and I will put it on the wall of books (outside our classroom in the hallway). As the year goes on, the wall of books will get larger and larger!

I have opened up my classroom library for the 6th graders to start checking out books today. They are all very excited about all of the books and possibilities :) We have almost 600 books in our class library! I just ask that they treat the books respectfully and responsibly, and help take good care of our library.

Ask your student tonight to tell you about independent reading and what book they are currently reading. They should be reading 20 minutes every day for homework!

Tomorrow, the 6th grade will be taking the beginning of the year Reading Inventory to set a starting point for the year, and find out their Lexile levels.
