I've been teaching music for 22 years. For 13 years I taught music at Vandenberg, and I am very excited to be at the Middle School for my third year this year!
I will also be helping Mrs. Hamer direct theatre again.

Choir is a performing group. They will put on a concert December 9th at 6:00 and May 8th at 6:00. This class is a year long class.
Students will be learning and memorizing many songs, but also will spend time on warming up, blending, breathing, music vocabulary, pitch matching, sightreading and ear-training, and may get the chance sometimes to play instruments (like Ukulele and Guitar) also.
Students may choose to participate in an optional solo/small ensemble contest in the spring. 8th grade students may have the opportunity to travel and perform with a large mixed choir with other students from around the area.
General Music will meet for one quarter and then go to another elective. This class will spend time learning what it is like to be a member of choir. They will have instrument units such as Ukulele, Guitar, and Keyboards. If time allows, we will explore world drums. We will also spend some time on music history, including traits of different musical time periods. They will listen to pieces by different composers and will be able to create their own pieces. They will successfully be able to identify the sounds of different instruments, as well as basic music vocab words for volume and speed. I will incorporate reading standards by asking them to analyze song lyrics and they may also create their own lyrics.
This year, General Music students will put on a short performance at the end of each quarter (during the school day), where we can show our families what we have been working on!
Here are the codes for my Google Classrooms. Please note that any assignments completed in Google will be graded by me and the REAL grade will be put into infinite campus portal.
Choir assignments will be in class only. Posts on Google Classroom are for extra practice at home -there will be tracks of music that students can listen to or sing along with. Important announcements and dates will be shared on this classroom page. If we go into a situation where school closes, I will put assignments into the choir classroom as well.
Most of our general music work will also be completed in class only. I may post some extra resources on classroom, and if we will be using the site, the students will know several days before so that they can prepare. If we go into a situation where school closes, there will be assignments on this classroom.

Choir will have a participation grade each week. This is 40% of their overall grade for the semester/year. We will have singing checks every few weeks and these are worth 20% of their grade. These are so I know they are learning their voice parts for our songs. The last 40% of their overall grade is being at and participating in the concerts (December 9th and May 8th).
General Music will have some assignments in Google Classroom. They will have class time to complete these. These are 20% of their overall grade. When we have instrument or singing units, any playing/singing checks I do will also be 20% of their grade. 60% of their grade is participation. (They will receive a grade weekly for participation).
I may also post additional content in the stream on Google Classroom if they'd like to explore some instrument playing at home.
