Right now there are ton's of things happening in every computer class at each grade level. Students are in full swing of learning the basics, gaining new information, and completing projects currently being worked on! See each grade level below for detailed information of exactly what's being covered.
Students are working on learning their mouse skills; click, double click, drag, click and drag, etc. How do we properly hold a mouse and navigate the computer with it? Student will be playing games and using different online platforms to practice and reinforce these skills.
Students are learning the different parts of the desktop computer. We will begin by learning about the Monitor. Then each week we will add one (tower, keyboard, mouse, mouse pad, and headphones). Students will also review each previously learned part before they learn the next new one.
Students are learning about all the keys on the keyboard. We will begin by learning all the letters and that there are 2 sets of numbers. We will discuss how the whole alphabet is on the keyboard and then talk about why one of the set of numbers on the keyboard do NOT work all the time.
Students are learning about how technology has progressed over time. We will talk about how technology was 100 years ago and then move up to present. Students will learn about how large the first computer was and how we have advanced with this. We will correlate that to cars, farming, and telephones.
Student are beginning to work on keyboarding skills. We begin with what is the proper ready position; sitting up straight, feet on the floor or dangling, and hands on homerow keys (left hand a, s, d, f and right hand j, k, l, ; ). Students will start with the homerow keys lesson, spending 2 weeks on this lesson because of the importance of the homerow foundation we need to build. Once done with the homerow lesson students will work at their pace through the 12 week course.
Students will continually be working on their typing skills throughout several projects for the rest of the year. They will demonstrate good posture and use proper hand placement and key strokes on the keyboard while doing their projects.
Students are reviewing how to choose a good website. Student will be doing a research project about a place on the planet. Students will get to pick a place of their choice and then they will collect fact about the place and create a presentation that will last 3-5 minutes. They will utilize the internet, books, powerpoint, and photostory for windows to create a video with their information and voice recording of their facts.
Students will continually be working on their typing skills throughout the year remembering to have good posture and use proper hand placement and key strokes on the keyboard.
Students are working an ultimate playground unit. Students have been tasked with mapping the current playground and equipment. They will also measure the grass area east of the playground for expansion. Students will use websites, equipment catalogs, excel spreadsheet, and powerpoint to create their presentation of how they would create the ultimate playground for all students to use.
Students will reacquaint themselves with proper keyboarding procedures and utilize various online typing programs to practice.
