Classroom Happenings

We not only survived the first two days of school, we thrived. Our second graders were able to get acquainted with one another as a class and a grade. This year in second grade, we aim to "be the change". So we will frequently get together to discuss, learn, and apply positive character traits. We started our Team Huddle on the first day of school with a little video. Enjoy!

This month's character trait is... INTEGRITY!

Integrity is a combination of kindness, honesty, trustworthiness, and fairness. Integrity should happen everyday, in every way. If you talk to your child about it...integrity means doing the right thing even when no one is watching. Encourage integrity outside of school!

Writing

  • Personal Narratives is a type of writing where students tell real events that happen to them. We began our unit discussing events that they feel strongly for and we are continuing to enhance our thoughts in an organized and detailed way. Now, we are beginning to add in amazing detail, like grabbing reader's attention, dialogue, and much more!

Words Their Way

  • We our beginning our first WTW cycle. Students are asked to take their words home. Please cut the words out, have your students teach you their word pattern, and practice sorts. Students know how to you sort, write sort, partner sort, blind sort, speed sort, and glue sort. Encourage them to practice their words in a variety of ways!

reading

  • We are working on rolling up our sleeves to solve tricky words. We can do this by looking at the illustrations, asking if it makes sense with the rest of the story, reading words part by part, seeing if their is a word within or word, and persevering by trying to solve the word in many ways.
  • In addition, encourage your child to practice using their reading muscles to grow bigger and stronger everyday!

math

  • We are working on place value. This is an exciting unit for us because this is where we can physically see what numbers truly mean and apply addition and subtraction in a purposeful way.

science

  • We are learning about seeds and how they travel, animals, and habitats. This is such a fascinating unit that I find myself learning with the students. Our world is incredible!

social studies

  • We will continue to learn about current events through conversations and scholastic news.
