Spelling Practice and Decoding Skills
Each week, our spelling words focus on a specific decoding skill we've been learning in the classroom, such as digraphs like "sh" and "wh," trigraphs like "tch" and "dge," schwa sounds like lazy vowels, or Latin chunks like "-tion" and "-sion." These skills help students understand how sounds and letter patterns work together to form words, allowing them to apply these patterns to spell other words in the real world.
While I do not expect students to memorize their spelling words, I encourage practice to build confidence for their tests on Thursdays. Attached are the weekly spelling lists to help with this. If you think of other words that follow these same spelling skills, I encourage students to practice those as well! Our spelling tests also assess grammar, so students are asked to write each word in a complete sentence, reinforcing important skills like capital letters and punctuation.
