What Are We Learning in Math?
5/4/2026
Hello first grade families,
On Thursday, we began Chapter 9, where students will learn about two-dimensional shapes and their attributes. We will explore shapes such as squares, rectangles, triangles, and circles, and discuss their sides and corners.
Later this week, we will begin Chapter 10, where students will explore three-dimensional (3D) shapes and their attributes. We will learn about shapes such as cubes, spheres, cones, cylinders, and rectangular prisms. Students will identify attributes like faces (flat surfaces), edges (where two faces meet), and vertices (corners). For example, a cube has 6 square faces, 12 edges, and 8 vertices, while a sphere has no flat faces, edges, or vertices—it is perfectly round!
At-Home Connection (Chapter 9):
Look for shapes in everyday life! Ask your child to point out and name shapes they see around the house or outside. You can also have them describe the shapes (How many sides? How many corners?) to build their understanding in a fun, real-world way.
At-home connection ( Chapter 10):
Encourage your child to look for 3D shapes in everyday objects around your home. For example, a cereal box is a rectangular prism, a ball is a sphere, and a can is a cylinder. Have them describe what they notice about each object—Does it roll? Does it have corners? This helps reinforce their understanding in a fun and meaningful way!
